musekatcher
I second the recommendation to add a top shelfer in there, like OF1897. But be prepared to drain one much faster than the other three
Enoch
I'm getting out my Winwood Georgia Straight Bourbon Wkiskey. I only have the one bottle so I don't get it out often. Guess who I am pulling for?

I'm sharing a bottle of ETL at our Super Bowl party. My nieces husband has shown some interest in bourbon lately, and ETL was on his list of things he'd like to try. I figured why not. Cheers! raymoall
The final four or the front line, finally. Swim meets and work put a crimp on my store visits. Found this which was a recommendation. On the high end, so expecting the OF to stand out from the pack. Fighting some upper respiratory thing, so hope this SBS kills it! Have fun everyone and thanks again.

Swoboda
Hey raymoall . . . how did this SBS shake out? Thanks!
raymoall
Yeah, sorry for not following up...it was a day to forget since i had to go to Urgent Care for acute bronchitis! That basically took me out of the fun since I didn't feel like washing down prednisone with bourbon ???? but the other guys had a good time. i was relieved (because of the price difference) that the winner was the 1897. Everyone thought it was richer and balanced and plain tasty. Would be nice to know if this is older than 4 years. For second, 2 picked EWW and 1 chose the HHBIB. All thought these were solid bourbons and maybe truer to BIB heritage. OE101 came in last. They were surprised it was a 7-year-old. A couple thought it was a little harsh on entry...and one felt like me when I had it earlier in the week -- that there was a different aftertaste with OE. To me, it was something -- but not exactly -- like the vitamin taste in Dickel 9. Bottom line OE was not horrible, but just lacking. I'm definitely getting the guys back together soon since I was cheated. Let me know if you put one together. I'm thinking 2 single barrels against 2 batches to see if anyone can tell the difference. Maybe Four Roses and I have some SB BT.

DeepCover
I don't want to mention that I was the first to recommend the 1897 BIB, but...
OldFitzWithTheGoldLabel
Last week, I found an OE101 7YR. I'm about 1/3 down the bottle, now. As I've posted elsewhere on SB, I, too, found distinct flavors - leaf mold, mushroom, wet leather gloves rubbed on the face by mistake while clearing deadfall, etc. - all in a good way. I can't explain why I love this stuff other than it is so different from everything else I really like.Wow, leaf mold and wet leather gloves does not sound appealing to me. I can see how it would be a unique taste, though. What is the nose to this bourbon? Mold? Mildew? Raw mushroom? Moss?Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

I've only sampled the 1897 and recall it being a bit astringent and not something I would buy at $40+ . . . especially when there's OFSIG at $23. I think I would have preferred the EWBIB and OE101 as they are regulars at our house and I simply like their flavor. I've never tried the HHBIB. It is not available in the KC area. It's definitely on my list of things to try when the opportunity arises. Edited March 4, 2017 by Swoboda

Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk The nose, believe it or not, to me is like a fruit brandy or maybe even strawberry wine being sipped while tending a charcoal fire. ALL these things - wet gloves, leaf mold, mushrooms, charcoal, and strawberry make me think of Spring. To me, there is nothing more cheerful than the scent of Spring in the air. Well, maybe crispy fat on a sirloin over charcoal or bacon on a snowy morning. And, ignore the pine tree pollen. But, I digress . . .
