Went to a liquor store if hit every once in a while and they a featuring a store select KC SB 120 saying it came from a 15 YO barrel. Is this legit? Another reason I'm asking is because this guy decides what whiskeys are allocated and keeps them behind a glass door and charges a premium over state minimum -- like $70 for a $50 bottle of YR 10.

And if this is legit, just wondering how oaky this might be...I can only handle so much.

Yes, it's possible for there to KCSB's at that age. I have a couple on the way to me from a friend who owns a liquor store out of state. No way to know how oaky they are without tasting. It's possible it could be greatly so and also possible that it's not much at all if it was aged on a lower floor.

^^^^What Steve said.  I've seen 13 and 14 year olds picked as recently as the past couple of months.  The one I'm currently working on is the 13 year old.

Interesting. I'm going back because I remember him having one KC 2001 among his barrel selects...wondering if he was getting "creative" with his marketing...because the 2001 is a 15 YO, right?

He sounds like one hell of a salesman, but it could be true. I'd need hard evidence before paying more though.

Ask if they have a bottle open to try before you buy. Most stores with store selects will always have one open. I figured all stores would have a bottle open until a few weeks ago where I ran into a store that didn't. Crazy IMO.

Pretty sure that in Georgia it isn't legal to have one open for the public to try and could theoretically cost the store its license.

If you know the right person at the store you might still be able to make it happen though! B)

Ugh. That's brutal. So you guys don't have free in store tastings? It's prevalent on Friday afternoons here.

My bad. Didn't pay attention since I saw this walking out the store. Went back and the big sign was about 2 bottles of store select KC 2001 he had mixed in with the rest. He was selling these for $130. The rest were 9yo for state minimum of $49. Plenty of these left... Might check out but seems like I could find these cheaper.

So, sorry for the bad info, but good to know there are some 10+yo selections out there. Hope you get some good ones!

Wow, $49 is the Michigan state minimum for KC 9 YO?  While diminishing some in Indy, it can still be found for around $30 or even slightly less.

Yep, $49.96 to be exact. Exactly why I enjoy going through your state to Chicago for business...but that's few and far between sometimes, so I often end up biting the bullet.

Wash DC allows it "off" the floor.  I've learned to ask.

EDIT - To be fair, though, I only ask if I already have decided to buy something else, anyway, so I don't feel guilty if I taste then don't buy the offered brand.

Brutal indeed. Most stores it is not an option. A few stores might offer an opportunity to try store picks it in the "backroom". Georgia's antiquated liquor laws are slowly improving but the operative word here is "slowly". Still places where Sunday sales are illegal although mostly now outside of the Atlanta metro area for the most part.

In CA, sampling is possible but the store must have a separate license on top of their normal license that allows them to sell liquor for off-premises. Given how few stores do sampling, I'd imagine these licenses aren't easy to get.

It seems that the OP's question has been answered, but I will add that it would be very difficult for me to pass up a 15yo KC store selection at anything close to a reasonable price. Even without tasting first.
