flahute
To borrow Bruce's rationale, this is not really premium but I suppose it is a specialty. Tweeted by Sku, 4yr wheated bourbon from MGP with a 51% corn, 45% wheat, 4% malted barley mashbill. Is this the first time we've seen this mashbill? https://www.ttbonline.gov/colasonline/viewColaDetails.do?action=publicFormDisplay&ttbid=17045001000299
garbanzobean
I want to say we saw it in some form at 2 years, but I could be mistaken. Let's face it, I'm probably mistaken. I think I'll wait another couple of years to try it, but I'm certainly pleased to see wheated MGP out in the wild.
Harry in WashDC
IIRC, MGP under Greg Metze created a young wheated bourbon for use as gifts to employees in connection with some Indiana celebration of the state's distilling heritage. I don't think it was sold to the public. BUT, a half-hearted search turned up no stories about it. So, like Eric, I may be recalling incorrrectly. mosugoji64
I'm pretty sure you're right, Harry. They did a bottling for a celebration in Lawrenceburg but I don't recall any specifics about the mashbill.
kevinbrink
Spirit of America was the MGP two year wheater that was released.
Harry in WashDC
Aha! Found the one I was thinking of, and I was wrong as I suspected - it was NOT a wheated. From the MGPI Press Release: Nov 5, 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MGP Supports Lawrenceburg Heritage with Limited Edition Bourbon Whiskey LAWRENCEBURG, Ind., November 5, 2014—MGP, a leading supplier of premium distilled spirits and a main sponsor of the inaugural Whiskey City Festival in Lawrenceburg, Ind., is proud to announce the release of Metze’s Medley. This limited edition Indiana straight bourbon whiskey has been produced in support of the festival that is being held this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8. “MGP has a proud legacy of making world-class whiskeys,” said President and CEO Gus Griffin. “This limited edition medley, mashed and distilled at our historic distillery in Lawrenceburg, celebrates that legacy and the whiskey industry’s long history in the Lawrenceburg community.” Metze’s Medley, a unique whiskey, consists of 20% 2005 Bourbon (21% Rye), 20% 2005 Bourbon (36% Rye), and 60% 2008 Bourbon (21% Rye). Showcasing subtle grain differences, this finely crafted combination delivers a rich full taste with slight vanilla notes and a spicy finish. The product is named for MGP Master Distiller Greg Metze, who has spent his entire 36-year career at the company’s distillery in Lawrenceburg. You were right Eric! Thanks to Kevin for the reminder. Spirit of America was released about this time last year I think at 2yrs old with the same mashbill. tanstaafl2
This MGP wheated mashbill has also shown up in Atlanta at around the same age as Fiddler bourbon sourced by ASW, an Atlanta area NDP and now distiller. They apparently took the whiskey from MGP and "fiddled" with it by putting it in some small barrels for "extra aging". I am not sure they did the whiskey any favors. They may take some and put it in other barrels they have acquired but I don't know if they have done so yet. ASW has since released their own distilled very young 100% malted rye and an apple brandy made with locally sourced apples. Their initial release was American Spirit Whiskey which is a sourced "spirit whiskey" made with NGS and less then 20% bourbon mash white dog that is then filtered as I recall. Not really made for this crowd but seems to have done ok for them. Hipster cocktails perhaps!
kevinbrink
Anyone else pick this one up yet? I'm not sure why I did but I pulled the trigger, $40 seems steep for a 4 year old wheater but I'll probably crack it tonight.
