CA Gold?

The best line is that after repeatedly describing how meticulous the measurements are, that a full bottle can come in anywhere from 110 to 125 proof.  Even to a layman, that statement says there's nothing precise or consistent about this concoction.  Additionally, the article says FRSiB is probably a component and with any SB, the bourbon can vary from barrel to barrel, further undercutting the a main premise of the article.  Same goes for components like Stagg, Jr., which was intimated to be a component, those come in batches that can have significant variations.  There's no way this stuff comes out tasting the same every time.  It's also not as legendary as the author thinks, because to my knowledge, it's never been mentioned around here, and we're super smart about this stuff.  That article only highlights the level of deuchbaggery that I imagine is going on in Facebook groups.

I've heard that Stagg Jr is the main component and Sherry is also used in the "top secret" blend.

Yea, obviously he never adjusts his measurements for the BP offerings that change proof from batch to batch.

 

I enjoyed the quote, "Friendly guy that he is, Strongwater is always willing to accommodate a few random strangers, so long as they have someone to vouch that they intend to drink (and not sell) California Gold."  Don't worry, buddy, there is no market for this thing, nobody will buy it.  Even the FB clowns are poking fun at this article.

The guy himself I have no problem with.  Many of us vat, and he may very well have come up with something delicious.  The article was insanely over the top, though.  

 

He has a point about Willett, though.  Everyone goes crazy about it but nobody knows what WFE really is.  They are really just master-vatters themselves.  I find it ironic that the same FB crazies who pay an arm and a leg on secondary markets for WFE (or Kentucky Owl or the Luxco vat I can't even remember right now or whatever NDP vat you can think of) think this guy is full of beans.  They are all full of beans, let's be clear.

I have nothing against the guy or home blending either. The article was over the top and the backlash was hilarious to watch. I'm 100% sure I'd rather have a sample of Joe's annual Weller blend he brings to sampler

Whether real or fake, screw CA Gold!  For once I'm gonna pat myself on the back.  My Weller vattings may have started out as something just for fun, but it eventually became a slightly serious obsession with me. (Not to mention a tradition at our gatherings in KY.) I take pride in them, and I do my best to create something good and unique for all to enjoy. FWIW, over the years, I think I done purty darned good.   While I don't have the resources to make numerous batches to sell, my s**t is free as long as y'all can make to Bardstown.   Like I said, screw CA Gold. I'd put my Plains Platinum up against that CA Gold crap any day of the week.

I won't be trying to track down Carolina Gold, but I did read the article that was suggested in the middle of this piece. It is by Sean Brock. I remember seeing a fun episode of some Anthony Bourdain show where Sean Brock was waxing poetic about his love for Weller, Waffle House, and Heinz 57.

I remember that Bourdain show now that you've jogged my memory.   That guy seemed to go out of his way to show how much he loves ordinary or out of favor things just to prove he's down with the hipsters (or because it's ironic).  He seems like the exact kinda guy that goes all in on the bourbon secondary for a hot minute until it's not cool anymore.
