Researched ABC store and have narrowed to:

old grandad bonded. $22

clyse mays $29

eagle rare 30

four roses yellow 21

woodford 33

russell reserve 10.  $36

buffalo trace 27

sazerac 30

redemption30

templeton 40

im leaning toward

ogd

clyde mays

eagle rare

sazerac

any other ideas??

Replace the Clyde Mays with BT RR10, or 4tyl. You won't be disappointed.

I would do:

Redemption rye (mgp)

Eagle Rare 10 (buffalo trace)

OGD (beam)

&

either russels (turkey) or woodford (brown-forman)

That would give you the most variety of different distilleries in the bottles you buy.

The Sazerac Rye is good, but I think the redemption (mgp) easily out-does it in terms of enjoyment and drinkability.

Not sure where you are at in your bourbon journey but I see many "basic" bottles on your list so I am assuming you are in the early stages. I'm also not sure of your finances but it sounds like you don't usually have $120 to spend on bourbon. If that's the case I think you might consider getting a couple bottles and setting some of that aside for when you stumble upon something special that's hard to find but pricier.

Absolutely and positively skip the Clyde Mays and Templeton.

With the ryes, only Sazerac should be considered.

If you're looking to stock up then I'd consider making a liquor run to the Costco in DC. (provided the A-town you listed in your location is Alexandria :D ). Their prices are about 25% less than ABC.

Thanks for the Costco advice. I am in Amherst (central Virginia), but do go to Arlington occasionally.  I'll see about going there next time

I'll give you a for instance, I got a jug of BT for $33 while the ABC has the 750 for $27.

I don't care for the Baby Sazerac. If going the young MGP route, it's hard to justify $30 for 12 month old redemption vs. $22 for the 4 year old Dickel rye. Both are MGP 95% Ryes. The Dickel is charcoal filtered.

Definitely early in my bourbon career  :) and I have found myself gravitating to certain bottles...    I have been drinking a bunch of Larceny, Basil Hayden, and Bulleit Rye as my standard go-tos.

I have then been trying things that are a bit more on the high side, but dont want to plow through them...  which brings me to my original post.  As you noted these are basic bottles but trying to branch out a bit and maximize value (as i have been speeding WAY to much lately).

Great advice.  Thanks...  was seeking to maximize variety...

My personal recommendations are BT, WT101, and SAOS - all available at ABC for about $40 and under.  BT I can't get over the value for such a good tasting bourbon.  I should point out that I was down in NC a few weeks ago and went into an ABC store there because I saw they had Weller's listed on their website.  The clerk told me they can't keep ANY BT products on the shelf there (which includes Weller's).  We should count out blessings that we can still get BT. And if you want something a little bit more expensive I'd recommend Blanton's for $59.

Eagle rare for sure, best damn bourbon $30 can buy. I wouldn't do the BT as well, as both ER and standard BT are the same BT mashbill at about the same proof, the ER being a bit older and better all around.

Then I would go Saz or Redemption, depending on if you want a barely legal 51% rye (Saz) or a 95% rye (Redemption). The Saz drinks more like a Bourbon at that rye content while the Redemption will be a punch of rye, so it just depends what you're looking for.

If they have it there I would grab a bottle of Henry McKenna too, at about $30 it's a 10 year single barrel bottled in bond with a unique flavor profile. Great stuff.

No problem! As far as the Clyde Mays goes, if it's their straight bourbon, they source it from Heaven Hill. McKenna is one of Heaven Hill's brands as well so I would do one or the other, and probably the McKenna because it's a BIB single barrel and it tends to score higher in reviews, but I haven't tried Clyde Mays.

If it's the Alamaba Style Clyde Mays, it's a whiskey that is aged with dried apples in the barrel, a flavored whiskey basically, I haven't tried that either.

Someone else mentioned but I'm guessing you should have access to Dickel rye I'd go for that.

Also definitely cut the Clyde.

OGD BiB high rye content solid as a mixer if needed

Eagle Rare at $30 definite compared to other prices

Russel Reserve 10

Do you have access to any Weller or Old Fitz maybe? I'd want to include a wheater if you can get Fitz or Weller maybe Larceny.

He's in the same boat with me in regards to Weller and Old Fitz - the Va ABC doesn't carry them.  They do however carry Larceny.

That stinks for fun I went on there webpage it doesn't even acknowledge that they exist.

My list

Dickel Rye $29

Eagle Rare $30
OGD BiB $22
Russel Reserve $36
Larceny $27

As someone else mentioned if you can drive to that Costco hopefully you can get some at a reduced price.

Just bought a bottle of Weller Antique 107 in Amherst County (VA ABC) Friday....    they just got a case in and kept it in the back.

Oh no don't tell DCFan he's been trying to score a bottle for a while now.

That being said I'd take the Larceny off your list.

I'd consider replacing it with something from Heaven Hill someone mentioned Henry McKenna single barrel that's a good choice. I'd also consider Evan Williams single barrel and Elijah Craig as alternatives if there's a big difference in price.

That's the thanks we get in NoVa, we pretty much carry the tax base for the rest of the state and when the ABC gets the good stuff they send it down state.
