Old Forester - BIB

The same local shop that had the Eagle Rare also had two bottlings of Forester BIB... IIRC one was like 109 proof. That said, what are good prices for it. Maybe one was 1897 and the other 1900?  Anyhow, as always appreciate any input...

1897 is the BIB but all BIBs have to be 100 proof exactly, so if you saw 109 proof it wasn't the 1897.  The 1920 is 115 proof.  Not sure what would be 109 proof..  Maybe you misread it and it was actually 100?  Or you saw two different Whiskey Row labels, one 1897 and one 1920?

I know it was two different BIB's so it has to be the 1897 and 1920 ... lots of numbers to memorize for just stopping by....

 

That said, what's a good price for these two?

Two of these are NOT (strictly speaking, or any other way, I suppose) BIB's.    My memory, being great but really short, reminds me that only one is a BIB (the middle one?  I think...).     All of them are called by their marketeers; "The Whisky Row Series".     My recollection of the first one is that was barely drinkable and not a bit reasonable in price ($50?).    The second one to hit the shelves was the BIB (I think), and was rather a better pour; but still not anywhere near worth the $50, that I seem to remember paying.     Now, the most recent one is far superior (and is 115-proof) to the other two in quality; but still no bargain ($60?).

Hmmm, guess I'll work at tracking down some of that Eagle Rare then in the $32-35 range....

Rich did get them right - the OF 1870 is 90 proof and runs about $55 around here ($47 on sale).  I think that's about $20 too high for what it is.

 The 1897 is a "Bonded" and says so on the bottle.  Around here it can be found for about $47 which is high when compared to basic BIB like JB (under $20) or HMcK 10YR SiB (under $35 sometimes) or even OF Signature which is 100 proof and sells for about $31.  The OF 1920 is listed on the OF website at 115 proof.

It sells around here for $55-60.  I've seen prices higher but few lower.

 

All that said, I'm a buyer of the 1897 at that price; for some reason, I just can't teach myself to like the OF Sig.  Go figure.  But for everyday bonded, I have found nothing that comes close to OGD BIB.
