Saw a case  while hunting today. Looks like none available in the states on winesearcher. Is this one I should go back and grab a couple of? Looks like it won some fine awards . It was $56 i believe.

Have you had any Balcones product before?  Or any Texas whiskey (since they mostly taste the same)?  It's VERY corn-forward, very different.  Some people love it; I'm not one of them.

I havent had Balcones..actually no corn whiskey nor Texas whiskey either... I wonder if the owner would let me taste it.. he was handing out samples  of everything left and right to everyone today. Just thought i might come on here and find its a hidden gem. This was probably the coolest LS ive been in with a great selection.

If your a bourbon fan you probably won't like it. Very young and corn forward tasting. I haven't found any of the Texas whiskey (bourbon) very good.

Save $40 a bottle and pick up HH's Mellow Corn, instead.

Yeah, but if you buy the HH Mellow Corn, you miss that wonderful, overwhelming taste and smell in BTB 100 of burnt, salted,  buttered popcorn.  HH Mellow Corn can be used in white Manhattans and similar drinks calling for white whiskey.  BTB100?  It just can't hide in ANYthing.  OTOH, I admit that there is that rare night when I just . . .

Okay... I will dissent from the majority opinion here and say that anything from the Balcones blue corn series is a piece of art! Yeah, I really like them that much. It sure is different, so having a taste is recommended, but I would buy the case in a heartbeat. Baby Blue is easy to find, but 100 and True Blue barrel proof are unicorns around here.

EDIT: Also I don't think this tastes anything like Mellow Corn, for better or worse.

I will not argue with this.  I am glad I bought the BTB 100 although I wouldn't bunker it and do wonder what the BP is/was like.  At $51 and based on my BTB 100 experience, I'd buy one.  RE: the MC comparison - I put Jacob's Ghost, HW's Silver, Death's Door, etc., in the category of new make with a little flavor which makes them useful for some cocktails.  The Balcones Blues stand alone IMO but depending on your preferences are an interesting change late at night while watching HBO because I can't sleep.

Bought a bottle of the true blue a couple of years ago after being warned by my local manager I probably wouldn't like it.  He was right, It's awful.  Easy pass.

  • 7 months later...

I tasted some Baby Blue in San Antonio awhile ago and I thought it tasted a lot like Glenfiddich 12 yr single malt.
