New metal screw caps on Weller 12?

Hey all!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the new metal screw caps on the Weller 12 bottles?

Earlier, I went to screw the cap back on my W12 (after pouring a hefty helping of this nectar of the Gods) and the cap screwed on and kept screwing on... It just keeps spinning now and never actually gets "tight".

I was afraid it wasn't sealing correctly, so I tilted it upsidedown and some liquid gold leaked out!

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? I just put an old wine cork in the neck of the W12 for now to get a seal.

Thanks in advanced for the help.

Cheers!

Karma for buying bourbon I love that I will drink? I'd rather be the one to buy 9 bottles of this that will get drunk, than it be bought by someone to just sit on a shelf to be looked at.

Not sure what your beef with me is @DCFan

Thanks for the informative, yet condensing answer!

Ha, ha - did you mean condescending answer?  I thought his answer was fairly concise!  But then, Engrish is not my native language . . .

DCFan was just yankin' your chain (did you see the smilie  :D?).   We're a pretty easy goin' bunch here on SB.com and I always take everything everybody says with that in mind.  Have another sip of that W12 liquid gold and relax/enjoy/savor it, please.  You'll feel better, promise.   ;)

Bahaha! Yes, I did mean condescending - darn iPhone!

I realize he was probably kidding, he just said "I abhor hoarders" in my first ever post:

when I'm definitely not hoarding them, I'm going to enjoy them. Wasn't sure how this could have been karma, unless he really thought I was hoarding them - I guess I did come off a bit abrasive and defensive, my apologies, that was not my intent.

Anyways, water under the bridge, DCFan!

You were right, GeeTen! The second pour definitely helped!!

Cheers!

Glad to be of service.  Someone was nice to me (Harry in WashDC) when I was a Newbie and just thought I'd return the favor.  Welcome aboard!   :)

Wow - metal screw caps?  I haven't bought any of the new Weller bottlings, but I wonder why they moved from plastic?

Although - tip I learned - when you empty bottles that have screw caps, save a few :)  I've had those crack when I ship a bottle in my luggage, so I always have a few in a jar.  Along with corks (and especially the synthetics!)

And if you haven't emptied any whiskey bottles - most water bottles will have caps that will do the trick!

i found some good single barrel Weller SR new bottle (metal cap) earlier this year while on a business trip.   Brought three home in my checked bags and one leaked a fair bit.  I wish they would get rid of the damn screw stops completely.... metal, plastic.. suck. it.

I reckon I'll have to keep an eye on mine. Over the last month or so, I've purchased a few "new" Weller's with the metal screw on caps. No probs yet.  FWIW, I never had a problem with the "old" Weller bottles with the plastic screw on caps.

Cheers! Joe

Plastic screw tops are the most reliable closure and Metal Screw tops are the worst, one man's opinion.

The new metal Weller caps do suck, and they will leak if you lay them on their side.  I've traded for a few OWA store picks and received a packaged that smelled great!  Not a big volume loss....noticeable leak though.  Parafilm or electrical tape is an easy way to seal em' up if you need to.

Corks leak as well. EC12/ECBP was notorious for cracked or leaking corks. Even the new slightly smaller versions on the new bottle styles leak.

I bought an ECBP batch 12 and a batch A117 one day. Put them in my trunk and in the half hour ride home, the A117 had leaked a thimble full into its plastic bag.

Metal caps are the worst, they can also get loose and leaky even with sealed bottles. It's a good idea to gently tighten them once in a while, as seasons & temperatures change. Pay attention to the direction and don't accidentally open the bottle though!

I would shrug it off. There is literally people on here that have stashed 20, 30, or 40 plus bottles of, say, BTAC and/or LE bottles, yet you will get passive aggressive answers to innocent questions. Has happened to me. No biggie.

People on here feel entitled to think they are more "deserving" or worthy to drink whiskey/bourbon. I am not into elitism or smugness. Just enjoy a drink whether it be bourbon, scotch, rum, wine, gin, w/e.

Bourbon...especially with friends.

Huzzah.

I'm in full agreement with the caps.  Cork is in between plastic and metal caps.  By the way the WSR with the metal cap is a good inexpensive pour.

Wish I could type this with a Latin accent.

  • 3 weeks later...

just my .02 on these caps.  I hate them.  I flew home with a few W12 I located on a business trip.  About 1/2 oz was pushed out of one of the bottles.   They aren't very air tight in my opinion. I know the cargo hold's on commercial aircraft are pressurized, but apparently not as well as I thought.

Have not ordered from them yet but this site might be worth checking, http://www.widgetco.com/t-corks

I have to agree that the move to metal screw caps is a step backwards imo.

I agree with Joe.

I have NEVER stripped a cap on any bottle of booze, which includes way more than a few plastic, as well as metal ones.

If I had to guess how many total metal ones I've owned; I'd put the number somewhere above 50.     Unless the 'new' Weller caps are somehow defective, or at least inferior to all the ones I've owned, I just don't see a problem with tightening 'em up adequately for decent seal without stripping 'em.

Me three. It's pretty simple IMHO.

#1. Make sure cap is on straight.

#2. Tighten cap until fairly snug.

#3. After making sure cap is snug, back off just a rch.

If any of y'all want to know what an rch is, pm me and I'll tell you. ;)

Cheers! Joe
