Christmas gift

For the past few years I've asked my wife for a new, different bottle of bourbon for myself as one of my Christmas gifts.  I will suggest one that I think I'll like.   Looking for suggestions around $40-50.  I like a sweeter bourbon.  I've enjoyed Eagle Rare, Makers 46, and my favorite, Blantons.  Not looking for anything too hard to find, just a nice bottle that's new to me.  Thanks for the suggestions.  I appreciate it.

Since you seem to enjoy Buffalo Trace, Stagg Jr if you want to try something barrel proof, CEHT small batch if you don't. The Stagg is a littler harder to find, but the CEHT SmB should be easy. Both of these should be right up your alley in any case.

 

A Knob Creek single barrel store pick in the 12-13 year range would be good too, these tend to have that caramel sweetness balanced well with a bit of oak. For something a little more adventurous maybe a Four Roses single barrel store pick if you can find one, though those are usually more in the $60-80 range.

Weller Special Reserve (IDK where in So Cal you are but they are in and around the San Diego/Orange County area typically for 25 to 30 dollars)

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch

Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond

 

I also might get flamed for this but I think Angel's Envy would be decent if you're looking for a sweeter profile. Its sourced but finished it a port wine barrel for a few months.

Seems that sub 100 proof is your wheelhouse.  I'd suggest you get a standard 4RSB and drop one cube in it, wait 5 minutes, and viola....you're drinking sub-100 proof nectar of the gods!

I agree with CEHT and Henry McKenna. I would also add to consider Wild Turkey Rare Breed. This is good stuff and should be pretty easy to find.

Many good suggestions above.   I'll add one of my own favorite options (sometimes);

A pair of bottles of a private pick of Buffalo Trace.     I've had a couple different picks that were stellar, and a couple others that were less so; but still within the profile I expected and a little better than the ordinary offering of BT.

Hard to be specific because we don't know what "new to me" is. Still, I'd go with the RR. Personally, I'd take a Stagg Jr. but it is only available in that price range in a limited number of places. Elsewhere, it can cost way, way more.

For easy to find bourbons, I would suggest Henry McKenna 10, Weller Antique 107, or something from Old Forester.  I really like the OFSB, but some people really like the OF 1920 or one of the other Whiskey Row series.

Based on what you like, maybe it is a generic pick but why not Blanton's? It's at the edge of your pricing and makes a nice gift, if it comes with a box it's also easy to wrap. Maybe a CEHT small batch. I don't care for it as much as ER but there arguably comparable.

I don't think you should ask your wife to get this but if you haven't tried I highly recommend HMcK 10 year or Elijah Craig to pick up on your own.

Only someone from TX would list OWA as easy to find, maybe a couple other places but in most of the country all the Wellers are ghosts.

I feel like I have the same taste in whiskey, so I'm going to list off my favorite bourbons (and their prices, near me in AZ) - the list below is in order of preference to me:

 

- Larceny ($25) - this is by far my favorite and "cheapest" bourbon I buy... If you haven't had it.... Buy it!

- Weller 12 ($30)

- Eagle Rare 10 ($33)

- Colonel E. H. Taylor Small Batch ($45)

- Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve ($47)

 

Funny, I never realized that my favorites are the less expensive ones... That's good news for my retirement account! 

 

Let us know how this all shakes out and what she ends up getting you... That's an awesome wife, by the way. I may have to ask my wife for a bottle of bourbon this year too, thanks for the idea!
