jvd99
Jim Murray named the CEHT Four Grain as the world Whisky of the year. Another seemingly dark horse winner. I didn't get a bottle of this nor have I tasted it, but I can think of dozens of bottles released last year that I'd pick over this one. Go figure
The Black Tot
Maybe now they'll make enough CEHT for people to actually get a few. CEHT has been a very successful line for BT. No age statement (some of the limiteds have, I grant), and most of them are rumored to be ~7yrs old. They are rather highly priced for their statistics. These last few years have really boosted the brand. Hopefully they've boosted the production numbers accordingly.
Mako254
CEHT small batch is a great whiskey for $40. Haven't had the 4 grain yet but the barrel strenght is excellent whiskey for me. Edited October 12, 2017 by Mako254

It is, but it puts it into perspective to consider that from the very same distillery, OWA is 7 more proof at the same age for 15 dollars less, and even W12 is less money. That's a lot more $/pour for a brand which was developed entirely without an age statement in a time when people were getting their backs up about the disappearance of age statements. I particularly love their rye, but I am still unhappy with it costing $65. I'm not sure how it's going to fare now that Pikesville and now Knob Creek high proof age stated (in Pikesville's case anyway) ryes are competing with it for much less money. Now that I type this, I can see CEHT releasing a limited edition age stated rye at 10yrs+. They've got the stocks for that. It's just a question of how much is going to get diverted to make the new VWFRR.

BottledInBond
Four Grain as whiskey of the year? Insane. As someone who has had this, I don't understand how he could make this claim. I was not impressed at all. Then again I thought the CRNHR whiskey of the year choice was also really stupid so how surprised should we be? I think sazerac and crown royal spend a lot of money in advertising/marketing to buy these accolades.

lcpfratn
I think CEHT 4G is pretty good bourbon. Does it deserve to be Whiskey of the Year? I don't know, but whatever whiskey gets that accolade every year is going to draw naysayers and criticism. It's a subjective title that many will never agree on. Huh - I thought the 2015 Yamazaki Sherry Cask was a wonderful dram, if not unobtainable! And I felt very lucky to have found (and shared with close friends that would appreciate it - sorry Harry, I was weak) a bottle of the 2016 at MSRP ! But the Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye as WWotY . . . . . . never understood that one, I guess. Edited October 13, 2017 by GeeTen

I like the EHT4G very well, though I'd have preferred to have paid about half of the ask, after tasting it. It is a bit 'narrow' in palate, even if the nose seemed to promise more. IMHO a very nice Bourbon, and not a bad example of BT innovation; but a winner against ALL other Whiskies? ...For the entire year? I feel I must scratch my noggin for a while on that one. The Black Tot
I'm starting to think there should be a production minimum of, say 50K bottles before you can be whisky/ey of the year. The others can be pipe dream of the year.

The 4G was certainly not available for many to try unless you got lucky like I did or paid up to get one. At least CRNHR was and is readily available, and is a good introduction to rye whiskey for many folks. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
The Black Tot
Jim Murray does exactly what I tell him to do. No more, and no less. I think it's time I tightened his leash.

I agree with Paddy - JB BIB @ $20 or less a 750 is something special and should have been "rewarded" if only to encourage others to do likewise - better than average products as reasonable prices. This year, the only whiskey thingee that caught my attention and cheered me up was the presence on the shelves of a whole range of basic Saz/BT products. (Well, that's not the ONLY thingee, but the thread's about WWotY so . . .)
The Black Tot
What I liked most about the Northern Harvest choice is that it is a motivating gesture for Crown Royal to release it's best flavoring ryes at higher than 80 proof and not cut with GNS. That is a long run win for every rye drinker.
Dango
I paid 40 bucks for a pour of the 4G at McEwens in Memphis, although not horrible, I said to myself I could have a whole bottle of CEHT SmB for the same price and thoroughly enjoy. The 4G didn't make me want another pour like the SmB always does.

NDN98
Considering the mediocre reviews, this one surprised me as well. I still haven't tried it, but have yet to talk to anybody that thinks it is a great pour.

eric bulis
It looks like there will be a second release of this as a 13 year old. I don't think that many have tasted this one but it does seem like most of the other reviews go something like, 'subtle, very good not great'. I wonder what people would say if they actually tried it

Ha - just paid $34.99 OTD for a CEHT SmB on Thursday after lamenting a price increase on a bottle of RHF from $39.99 to $44.99 (which I bought anyway)! And I still got WA107 for $21.99, too. But I've never even seen a bottle of CEHT 4G on the shelves in any of my travels to buy or try - boo hoo.
