The upcoming NYC WhiskyFest includes a Barton 1792 Bottled in Bond pour as one of the VIP offerings. I was unaware that this expression existed-- has anyone run across this in the wild or at the distillery?

Thanks, Dave

The label was approved by TTB in May of this year with an expected release date of early 2018.  Looks like you're going to get a sneak preview.  It's not on their (1792) web site yet.

Let us know what you think. I'm a fan of 1792 so I'm interested in hearing about the BIB.

This was my mystery review in the most recent Virtual Blind Tasting #617.  You can read my tasting notes there if you want to.

I quite liked it, tho it does have a flaw or two.

I agree with the part about 'quite liking it'!

I'd modify the last part, though.

The only flaw worth dwelling upon at all that I found was the price.

I loved the rich mouthfeel, the well-rounded and balanced palate, the depth of the main flavors and the pretty straight-forward 'Bourbon' nose.    The finish was not too shabby either.

I didn't think the price was terrible. IiRC it was right around $35. That does make it twice the price of VOB BIB though.

IMHO really good and far above VOBbib on all points that matter (except price...).  I scored 2 at $40 per in Memphis a few months ago, which I've observed as the typical low going rate for 1792-other-than-smb in AR, KY, & TN.  $45 has been my top limit on same (store picks included).

I have a bottle of it which I picked up for about 36 bucks. This is an excellent bourbon, especially if you are a fan of 1792

I can't remember exactly; but, I think I paid over $40 for the bottle I bought in The Mitten State.   That made it nearly double the other options, or even more, for BIB's.

My palate finds it exceptional in the BIB category, though, so an up-charge is warranted.      I wouldn't call it a bargain at the going rate; but it is a wonderful pour to my taste buddies, and I'd grab another, if I found one.

How does it compare to the Early Times BIB?  I haven't spent time with the sample you gifted me (thanks by the way!!  I DO intend to do just that - at some point!), although since these never seem to be on the shelves long enough - it may not make much of a difference.

Well, the ET BIB is a fine pour, and a rather better bargain (especially since it comes in a full liter); but for only the quality of the distillate contained inside the two bottles, I'd give the edge to the 1792 BIB.    To my taste buddies it's a better balanced pour (not as sweet as the ET, which skews in that direction), is a bit more complex, and has a richer mouthfeel by a little bit.    Of course the 1792 BIB may be lousy to some palates.       It is a Barton product and as such (to me anyway) has that cereal quality I find in their distillate (which I like) that may not light up the sky for some folx.

All that said, sometimes I might well reach for the ET BIB before the 1792... partly because it's easier to find ... but, also because sometimes I want that sweeter profile, as well as the shellac note I find in it's nose (and most of the BF line).
