Does a shelfie/casual bourbon have to be one of the cost effective ones?  While I do have some open bottles like Old Fitz BiB, HH6 BiB, EC SmB, they sit right next to the W12, Pikesville Rye, Old Forester SiB, ECBP.  OWA, WTRB, etc and rotate equally.

I'm with you on this. I have a lot of bottles open and rotate through them regularly. I haven't found one that I really gravitate to more than other yet.

It tends to migrate over time but right now it's ER10, HMcK10, Bulleit 10, EWSiB, RR10, and Witherspoon.

Does your daily pour differ for drinking cocktails as opposed to drinking neat or with ice?  It does for me.

 

OWA would be my daily pour for drinking neat if I could find enough of the stuff.

 

BT and HMcK10 are my go to mixers for bourbon cocktails.

Definitely.  My mixers come two ways... 

 

I keep a few handles specifically for mixing.  4R Yellow, Maker's, and WT101.  These are a step above normal mixers I see when out with non-hobbyist bourbon drinkers, and are usually grabbed enthusiastically.  I don't have any issue sharing my best stuff with those interested, just don't want my W12 used by someone just looking for a drunk...

 

My other mixers are bourbons I didn't connect with when drinking neat.  OGD117 comes to mind.  Also, several lackluster NDP purchases or gifted bottles fit this.  I'll also use BT on occasion, but like it neat too.  Personally, I like the way rye stands up to mixing, so usually grab Rit or HWDR for an old fashioned.

Mixers for me are things that I bought that although they aren't bad I find myself not drinking them straight.  Recently those included Town Branch (now empty), Bird Dog 10 year SmB, VOB BIB.  I just realized that most of my bottles I would hesitate to use to mix somebody a cocktail.

Mine are reasonably-price, single barrel store pics. Most often KCSB, BT, or EC. Between those 3 labels, I probably have over 10 different barrels right now, so lotsa choices when I'm "slummin" it.

wt101 and probably EW SB only reasonably priced around these part. Favorite is EC NAS but a 1.75 will run me north of $70 even if it can be found.

I used to be a Jack Daniels man but they have lowered the proof from 90 to 80 and I don't think they age it as long.  Saw a bottle of Dickel 12 on sale, saw it was 90 proof. I tried it and was instantly hooked.  Said to contain whiskey that has been aged 8-10 years.  I think you will enjoy it.  One I should have mentioned is Rock Town Arkansas Bourbon from my home state.  It is my favorite wheater.  They will do nothing but get better as their stocks continue to age.

NC just recently started carrying 4RYellow Label again and that has become my go to "I just want to sip and not think" pour, replacing EW BIB. For Tennessee whiskey I really enjoy the Dickel 12.

NC occasionally gets the 80 proof version, but I wasn't a fan. I keep meaning to revisit since I seem to be in the minority on it.

Keeneland (horse racing) has a mixed drink that I tried this fall called a Keeneland Breeze and really enjoyed. Since then, I have been pouring peach syrup on ice and then pour a health amount of WSR on top. With the warm fall we have had, this is perfect. Now that the weather has turned cold I have switched to Barterhouse and OWA. No syrup or ice. I can't wait to open some more bottles around Christmas.

For something that is both readily available and fairly cheap, Eagle Rare 10 is tough to beat. Four Roses single barrel is a bit pricier, but also a strong contender.

 

For cocktails, we always keep Maker's Mark, Four Roses small batch, Very Old Barton, and Sazerac rye on hand. I have a first bottle of Rittenhouse and that might also be a keeper for cocktails.

Now that you mention it, I’ve never had the 80 proof. It’s hard for me to tell the difference between the 86 and 90, but if you’re ever in Kentucky and see the white label 100 proof BiB, it’s first rate.

I'm really enjoying ER10 and RH neat right now. When I want it smooth and sweet the ER fits the bill, and when I want some tingle I go with the RH.

I always have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 open and if times are good, OWA. I recently opened a new bottle of each, and both were some of the best quality I've had in years
