The most you would pay...if mutilple choices were available?   Similar to what would you pay for a 750 bottle.  What prompted this question was I went into a bigger local.  I wouldn't buy there as there price are high.  I asked what he received this year.  He didn't go into specifics, but said it was all gone.  He said, they call a few of their special customers and make offers.  After that it goes on the shelf, first come, first served.  He said they put it all out, one guy came in and paid $8,000 and purchased it all.  I asked the salesman, wouldn't it be nicer to other customers to limit sales to one or two bottles a piece.  He said, that was there policy.

So, you want Pappy (maybe).  You want the Buffalo Trace antique collection.  There is everything you always wanted (assumption).  The guy will sell you all you can afford. How much would you spend?

To make this easier to answer, two assumptions,

  • The prices are reasonable (you can define reasonable)
  • The item for sale is something you want.  So if antique collection doesn't float your boat, maybe they are all different Blanton's (example)

I wouldn't have thought this situation was possible until Bruce Jenner turned into a woman. Now I realize everything is possible. So taking this bourbon buying opportunity seriosly. I wouldn't buy all of it like the guy in your example, but probably would not blink an eye at paying  $2000 for one of each of the BTAC and VW line...... now that I am thinking about it better give me two each. May be a once in a lifetime opportunity moving forward..... Ok could be talked into three each, but that's my limit.

I entered the lottery this past summer for the ORVW25 which was $1800. If I was one of the 10 winners I would've run to the ABC but I would've gagged somewhat (a lot probably) as I have never splurged on anything that extravagent or to that extent. It's not the way I roll but I did enter the lottery for the PVW Collection ($1k). Another extravagence as was the EC23 that I did win. :D

First off, WOW...there's actually a store somewhere that sells all the unicorns to one guy all at once?  Haven't heard of this happening since about 2012.  I'm not gonna mince words here, if I walked in and had the opportunity to buy $8,000 worth of unicorns for near MSRP I'd clear the shelves too even if it required a loan.  This is the equivalent to buying a stock for like $20 a share and then looking the next day to see it at $60 a share.  I'm sure that's what the purchaser was doing...probably an experienced flipper that knows he can double or triple his initial investment...and ya can't blame him if the store is gonna sell it to him at MSRP.

So where is this...in NY somewhere (I see you are from Long Island)? Maybe I need to quit my job and head up there for some good old hunting :P

I'd be interested to know what the guy got for $8k because you could buy a bottle of each of this years VW and BTAC for under that amount on secondary so if he didn't get multiples he didn't get a deal.

I'm waiting for a distro error that leaves an allocation at Costco for Costco prices where I'm the first to stumble upon it.  I'd buy as much as I could afford.  I'd sell enough to make what I was keeping to drink free and sell the rest at cost to my drinking buddies.  More realistically I had an option to buy multiple THH last week and bought one.

That would be relative to your income level now wouldn't it? What's attainable to some people is unimaginable to others. I'm in the under $70/bottle crowd but I'm very happy in that group. If that makes me ignorant then I'll abide by the ignorance is bliss adage. :-)

I spoke to a girl at work.  He father owns a liquor store.  She said this is not an uncommon practice.  She has seem people drop $20,000 and more in one shot.   I am amazed.

For anyone on Long island I came across a store yesterday who had on the shelf PVW 23/20/15/lotb 12 and was asking 6500-7000 for the all of them combined them.  Said would work a little if bought all as a set. Too me that's just too expensive.

Back in about '96 or so my favorite old school local was shutting down. They had Bladnoch 1963, glen Scotia 1967 27 year, pre war cognac, AH Hirsch (it was new back then), Ambassador 12 and 25, old Ardbeg, Brora, Port Ellen, Rosebank,  old Springbank. Bourbons I can only dream about now.  and many more.

Over about a three week period even with the 30-40% discount I put about 3000 on my credit card. I'm sure if my wife had known she would have murdered me.

I had and enjoyed all these with friends over the next ten or more years. Wow what an education it was. And good times.

I would easily do it again given the chance. That opportunity was once in a lifetime I am sure. Highly recommended if you can swing it.

Cheers,

RW

I could not imagine paying $1000 for all.

This is about what I would do, given the chance. In terms of today, I would have no problem putting a few thousand on a credit card if the value was right, but prices just keep skyrocketing to the point where $1000 will get me two bottles.

I have also noticed the past year or so, standard bottlings have vastly improved over their 2012-2015 counterparts. However, I had this year's WLW and I have to say it was not much better than OWA, which leads me to believe as distilleries rush to catch up on supply to meet the demand for these limiteds, the quality is going to be much less the next few years, whereas let's say the standard WT101 has already caught up. That being said, for all the BTAC, Van Winkles, 2 Four Roses, Kentucky Owl, and maybe a few others, I would not go past $2000 and even just typing that I feel faint. My father once told me about a really good, yet expensive bourbon he had decades ago, "It was damn good bourbon, but it was still just bourbon."

As an enthusiast who's taste outweighs his wallet, I'd pay MSRP for each and not a cent more. Damn those bills!

People can spend their money any way the wish.  My perception of what is an acceptable price for many of the highly sought after annual releases probably differs from some but I imagine it is more in line with most.  I am willing to pay 20 -25% over MSRP for something that is limited and I know I will like.  I believe BTAC MSRP is $90.  I would pay $125 for a GTS or WLW.  Maybe $110 for THH.  $100 for Saz18 or ER17.

PVW23 - not interest even at MSRP.  Too much $$$. I am not going to pay $270 for a bottle of whiskey.  PVW20 - would consider at MSRP.  PVW15, Lot B and ORVW - 20 -25% over MSRP.  FR SmB LE - would consider at MSRP.  Interest in other special releases depends on the release.

I reason things the same way you do though where we fall on some of these is different (for example I wouldn't buy Lot B with your money) but I definitely would (and have) go over retail for some of my favorites but even then not by too much.
