My friend said he knows a store that carries different Blanton's.  I have only had the Blanton's you can purchase from my local.  If you could buy the ones below, which would you buy and in what order:

Blanton's Black

Blanton's Special Reserve

Blanton's Gold

Blanton's straight from the barrel

They also supposedly have Blanton's Silver, but it is out of $$$ reach.

I have no idea (other than proof) what the differences are.

For those that have actually tasted these, please let me know how they compare to each other and how they compare to USA Blanton's.

Thanks guys!

Happy holidays!

Whichever one is green sucks at 80 proof.  I think Black is 80 proof too?

Sorry, I don't have an opinion on this as I've never tried anything other than plain Jane Blanton's. I'd be interested what others say... I've always wanted to try STFB & Gold.

Cheers!

From my understanding the special reserve is of a lower tier than the regular Blanton’s, so that would probably go to the bottom of the list... I made a thread about getting SFTB last week, and consensus seemed to be it is fantastic, though others find the Gold to be the favorite of the bunch... not really sure what the Black is all about, but it appears to be just a proofed down version of the regular Blanton’s bottled for the Japanese market.

fishnbowljoe helped me with this….

SFTB*- Special Label, Barrel proof

Gold*- Clear Label, 103 proof

Special Reserve*- Green Label, 80 proof

Original Single Barrel*-Brown/Tan, Label 93 proof

Silver Label-98 proof

Black Label-80 proof

Thank you BourbonGuy for posting this question. I have two different sets of family traveling to Ireland this coming year and have asked them to bring me several bottles back from their trip. After reading everyone's opinions, I am going to ask for gold and sftb only. A coworker may be going to Japan this spring, I may have him bring me a Black just for the heck of it.

A few weeks ago, a beer/liquor/wine delivery company held a bourbon lottery to promote their brand. They had Old Fitzgerald, Elmer T Lee, Rock Hill Farms, and Blanton's Gold. They limited it to 50 people. The first person they called came up and picked....the Old Fitzgerald. I got called second and picked Blanton's Gold. I was pumped and plan to open it on New Years Eve.

Both are good.

For 100 dollars, though, SFTB is not a better pour than say ECBP. Taste is subjective and that's how I feel comparing those two.

Gold and SFTB

That does seem to be the consensus.    Anyone taste both and can mention the differences.

One other question...why is Blanton's silver so much more expensive then the rest? ( at least in this liquor store)

In general?   Because they can.

If folx are willing to pony up $XXX for the opportunity to own a difficult-to-source brand, why not accommodate 'em, or even gouge 'em for the privilege.   Certainly that puts profit foremost, and 'retail-fairness' behind; but 'retail-fairness' is even rarer than the LE's some folx seek, if it exists at all.    Remember these folx are in business to make a living by selling stuff.    It's pretty basic when you bring it down to the bottom of the page... They're in it for the money.

Whatever any of us does for a living is basically in order to obtain a decent lifestyle, no?
