For no particular reason and drifting a bit, I know, I offer this...

I almost tossed an empty this afternoon of Old Rip 10.    It was one of the old wide body/long neck ones.   I caught myself before the recycle collection truck came, though, and ran out and grabbed it back up.

Am I being anal, paranoid even, to be a bit leery about tossing such an empty (not wishing to help some scammer)?     Anyway, I ran out and rescued it, and put it in a closet, for now at least.

What say y'all?

I used my ORVW10 squat bottle for my personal solera bottle.

In fact if one has broken glass to dispose of, the recommendation is to wrap it carefully and tape it securely closed, then mark the package as 'Broken Glass', before placing it in the trash (not the recycling bin).

Two big assumptions with that.

A - they can read

B - english is their primary language

Certainly valid points; both, DCFan.   Nothing I can do to help either one, however.

I assume the point of their request for this procedure is to make one believe this stuff is ultimately hand-sorted.    Of that I have my doubts.    My evidence is that twice, when they were recovering their schedule from a Holiday, I saw 'em pick up both the recycle bin and the trash bin and dump 'em both into the same common truck.   Makes me wonder if they ever do recycle my stuff; or only say they do.   ...And get paid under the contract to have done so.

I have several others I use for vatting, and a big one for the solera.    The wide base of these Old Rip bottles make 'em space hogs, which I can ill afford on my crowded shelves.

I know you want to do what you can to help. Most of us feel the same way. The other concern with writing on the bottle is that huge compactor in the back of the trash truck. I have to believe that said bottle is going to get crushed to smithereens negating your best efforts at protecting some trash/recycle sorter down the line.

A side note on recycling. The big beach town in the DC/Baltimore area is Ocean City, MD. They used to do the separate trash and recycling thing but ditched it a few years ago because it cost too much and was more trouble than it was worth. So everything goes into one trash can just like the old days, planet be damned. :D

That's not exactly true, pretty sure they are using a private company for trash collection that uses trash as fuel for energy production. Most of those companies collect metals after the fact to be reused and some  also use water based separation systems to do a pre-sort.

I don't know what they do down the line but it would seem to speed things along if they segregated the recyclables from the regular trash.

As I understand it, many municipalities no longer recycle glass, saying there is no market for it, as it is cheaper to produce new glass than reclaim the old.

It's kind of funny that a thread about ORVW has descended into a literal conversation about trash!
