Man, you know I'm from TX. I'm not cut out for this. It's still cold up here in The Woodlands.

It’s still cold down here but yesterday seemed historically cool for Htown.

I've got bottles of both OF 1897 and 1920.  I know it's sacrilege to some but I think I like the 1897 slightly better than the 1920, although they are both good.

Oh you poor thing!  We got over 15" of snow yesterday, wind chill going down to -14 tonite.  And I'm still heading to URI in South Kingstown, RI later this afternoon to officiate a swim meet over the weekend.  Wind chill tomorrow forecast to -30!  Now where's that HWMWND Act 5 Scene 8 for the weekend???

Yeah its cold out there, I'm done shoveling out.. Good thing I also have HWMWND Act 5 Scene 8, but I'm at 1/2 a bottle. This stuff is good.

How long has the 1920 been open? To my palate, that one definately improved after some oxidation. When I first opened the bottle it was an off flavor combined with heat but it has become mighty tasty once about a 1/4 of the bottle was gone.

Been battling this cold since last Friday. Sore throat, lungs full of gunk, sinuses plugged. Got home from work last night and just needed something soothing and comfortable. Opted for Blanton's. Poured a double, dribbled a couple drops of water in it and took a swig... YUCK... HOT, bland, searing on the throat, reminded me of doing well whiskey shots in my youth. Guess I should have waited on the chewable vitamin C tablet and the salt water gargle until AFTER the bourbon...

It's probably been open for about 5 months.  It's also been about a month since I had any and a few weeks between those pours.  I do recall that like you some of the heat has mutated to more flavor.  I think that's what I like about the 1897 a little better is that the flavor is still there with just enough and not too much heat.

 

Sounds like I need to do a SBS of these two later this evening.

I haven't had the 1897 yet, but I've been considering picking up a bottle.  I like the 1920 a lot, and I've been curious about how it differs from the 1897.

If that's not good try a hot toddy. I find that having a bit of bourbon about day 2 into me being sick helps with my sore throat. I like to think the high proof kills the bacteria lol. Of course I might just be fooling myself too.

I have an 1920 that I will be getting to soon. I like the 1897 over 1870 though.

Nothing over the past two weeks as I was fighting off a nasty sinus infection.  Dipped my toes back in the water with a pour of RRSiB while watching U.S. Women's Olympic Qualifying Fiqure Skating.  Another bitter cold Indiana winter's night.

I think most of us would agree with you, MTNBourbon.   

The first offering in that Whiskey Row series (the 1870) was not a winner.  

The BIB was lots better.    AND, the 1920 was rather better yet. 

I think you'll like it very well.    Let us know.

OK.  Just finished a SBS of 1897 and 1920.  Used my new SB Glencairns, which probably made both taste better.  

 

Poured and let them sit for about 5 minutes.  Started with the 1897 since it's a lower proof.  Good legs in the glass.  Nosed some acetone at first but with a swirl in the glass it dissipated.   Other things were caramel and mint.  Tasting I also got the caramel and mint but also some tobacco.  Nice warmth on the finish with not really any burn at all.  

 

Moved on to the 1920.  Nose was the same as the 1897, just a bit stronger.  Acetone aroma took a little longer to dissipate.  Legs good in the glass.  Tasting was the same as the 1897, just a bit more amped up.  More heat in the middle and all the way down. 

 

The heat of the 1920 is not objectionable and if you enjoy the higher proof you'll pick it over the 1897.  The 1897 was to me slightly better as the balance of the flavors was more pleasing to me.  Taste is very similar, which you would expect.  Think of the 1920 as the bigger stronger brother.
