Used my new SB Glencairns, which probably made both taste better. Poured and let them sit for about 5 minutes. Started with the 1897 since it's a lower proof. Good legs in the glass. Nosed some acetone at first but with a swirl in the glass it dissipated. Other things were caramel and mint. Tasting I also got the caramel and mint but also some tobacco. Nice warmth on the finish with not really any burn at all. Moved on to the 1920. Nose was the same as the 1897, just a bit stronger. Acetone aroma took a little longer to dissipate. Legs good in the glass. Tasting was the same as the 1897, just a bit more amped up. More heat in the middle and all the way down. The heat of the 1920 is not objectionable and if you enjoy the higher proof you'll pick it over the 1897. The 1897 was to me slightly better as the balance of the flavors was more pleasing to me. Taste is very similar, which you would expect. Think of the 1920 as the bigger stronger brother. I think I will also do a SBS. Kinda like Arrogant Bastard, Double Bastard.

GeeTen
ECBP B517 - went to a really big, nice, clean, fancy liquor store here in North Kingston, RI looking to "get liucky" and find a dusty or two, maybe. Nuthin' but a bottle of ECBP A117 on the shelf for $74.99. Asked if they had anything "out back" and the sales guy say they have a "cave" with the "good stuff" over yonder. Only thing I find is a bottle of ECBP B517 with no price tag - figured is would be the same as the bottle on the shelf. Go to check out and the cute cashier says "$200!" Whaaa? Go down the road a piece to "Townline Discount" Liquors, run-down, neighborhood joint with most cheap wine and cold beer. Lo and behold, IO find a bottle of ECBP B517 for $69.99 OTD (no tax on hooch in RI) - guess what followed me back to the hotel to keep me warm last night (no, not the cute cashier you PIGS).
jeffrey r
OK. Just finished a SBS of 1897 and 1920. Used my new SB Glencairns, which probably made both taste better. Nice write-up, and thanks for the SBS. Now that Statesman is out, you need to pick that up and do a SBSBS... . Seriously though, for just knocking back a drink, I probably prefer 100 proof over 115 proof. But especially considering the prices on all of these are in the same ballpark, I like the idea of having the 115 proofer around, which I can drink as is, or water down to lower proof as I see fit. Plus, I think that OF really does their “prohibition style” well, such as it is. Bold and chewy.Anyway, IMHO, as long as OF continues to not put age statements on any of these, it is getting a bit hard to distinguish between all of their offerings. 86, Signature, 1870, 1897, 1920, Statesman. Getting kind of silly.
kcgumbohead
I was recently gifted some samples, tried the first last night, a Bib and Tucker smb 92p. I dont recall seeing it on a shelf though I had heard of it. Reminded me of 4R Smb robbed of any complexity. Its sourced so no idea who makes it but it is 6 yr AS from a #1 char barrel? Not much flavor in this one, at least its not bitter but no meat on the bones IMO. THEN I looked up how much this stuffs costs, 55.00!!! Glad to have tried it but thats about it, this one is now in the been there done that column. Just for fun and as a taste reference I followed it up with a splash of VOB BIB and HH6 BIB. They were their usual delightful selves.

Getting kind of silly. Kids got me a bottle of Statesman for my birthday. I've also got an OF SiB too. Sounds like I need to do a SBSBSBS tasting. I like the Statesman but right now I would rank them 1897, 1920, Statesman and lastly SiB. I like the higher proofs if the proof brings more flavor (Stagg Jr. for example) but if it's just more heat then not so much.

cdcdguy
Visiting friends in Chicago and playing pool last night. Started with a pour of Wyoming. At 88 proof, light but very nice. Moved on to Dickel 12 year. Nice but a bit too much corn for me. I can see why people like it though. Finished with Blanton's. While not overly complex, this is a fine bourbon. HoustonNit
Cooked some ribs and a few wings. Had some W12 and now some JD SiB barrel proof. The barrel proof Jack is opening up but I don’t see myself getting another one.

$helby
It's 23 degrees on the coast tonight with way to much black ice on the roads to safely go out. Believe me the HWAMND has been very comforting over the last couple of nights. I did cheat with a dram of 10 year Port after dinner though. However, to be honest, I find both WTRB and WTKS worth the extra cost. You just have to get it when its on sale.

Good decision to stay off the roads and to warm up with a nice pour of whiskey. Indianapolis just went through the longest period of days without a temperature greater than 20 degrees in recorded history. I found that interesting since I can recall some really long cold spells. I decided to warm it up a little tonight with a nice pour of ECBP B517. I always proof it down to between 100-105 but that is plenty warm enough.
