Lottery participation

If it is an in-person lottery, and I decide to go, my wife usually goes and we both get a ticket.  I have never stood in line for a bottle of whiskey.  I once did for a computer at Best Buy and that was a waste of time.  Most of my friends drink bourbon so they wouldn't stand in line to get an LE bottle for me since they would want it too.  The friends that don't drink bourbon probably wouldn't either since they don't get the madness for the stuff.

Lotteries and the furor around LEs is a major turnoff for me.  Mostly because it's about speculation more than anything and the last thing I want to do is participate in that process.

I might feel differently if I didn't already have everything I wanted in the closet, but honestly no whiskey is worth all that hassle and expense to me.

I am a big fan of lotteries because otherwise I'd be getting zero LEs. I don't shop enough to build a relationship, no family or friends around to share with, so I buy very little and can still rock a huge collection :) And there are also times I am not taken seriously in liquor stores (e.g., denied samples while everybody else can get one). I'm still not 100% this happens, but I have my suspicions. In any case, lotteries save the day. I'm pretty sure there must be other people sharing these circumstances, so don't bash those lotteries!

Ok you got my curiosity going on this statement. I'm thinking of various scenarios why you'd be singled out and denied a taste in Boston - minority, hooker, cross dresser, goth, young republican, hippie, Oriental (hi Gee :D ).  Or do you do your LS shopping in Mattapan? Do tell!

Hee hee.  I have never found a place that hasn't offered me a taste - maybe they know that the Chinese that show up in their Spirits aisle can metabolize alcohol (not all can, like my 95-year-old Mom) or have so many $100 bills in the little brown bag they're carrying (been to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun lately?)  that they need to buy expensive gifts!  Or maybe they've already gotten to know me in person or by word of mouth (all the store owners talk to each other, except for the Total Wine folks - and they already know me from my stint as the de facto Spirits Supervisor in Natick before I quit after Christmas last year).

The ONLY time I was denied a taste of whisk(e)y was when I was only wearing my Speedo (sorry for those of you who had to wash your eyes who know my robust figure).  Musta' been 'cause I wasn't wearing a shirt I guess.

Merry Christmas to all y'all!  Stay safe this holiday season, please!

Haha, on the contrary, I think you'd have a very difficult time being singled out in any of those categories in metro Boston. Folks here put my so-called extreme liberalism to shame :) My fave party trick is to intentionally "talk shit" about a certain minority group until some smartass with no stakes or knowledge comes trying to pick a fight, and then I reveal I am in that group for a precious moment of awkwardness.

I think it's mostly my looks. They still card me every time, and it is not rare for liquor stores to warn me at the door that they don't sell to minors. I am nearing 35 btw.

Did my first lottery the other week - store had flyers for a week or more, then handed out tickets (1/person) 1 hour before drawing.  Def saw couples & groups, but didn't notice anything that looked like a mass flipper attack.  Most  were single to couple bottles with a few at 3-5 available.  Best thing was everything at suggested list - one W12 at $29, one 20yr Pappy @$210, one 15yr Pappy @$110, few ETL @$37, and so on.  My ticket finally came up @ 20+ minutes in and I walked out with the only bottle of 1792SW, only the second time I've seen a bottle in the wild since it came out.   I'd do it again, maybe a fc/fs too if the crowd wasn't outrageous.  But only if priced reasonable, the Bourbon pimps can pound sand.
