Flippers on eBay

There are tons of expensive bottles of bourbon on eBay currently. I inquired to eBay about it and they said they would remove any that were brought to their attention. I decided to test this so I reported a bottle of Pappy 15 that started at $300. It sold 7 days later for over $700, so I guess eBay doesn't have time to do much. By the way, I really don't care if eBay sells alcohol but don't care for flippers.....

WSR for $75!  Ha ha.

I guess they're technically selling "collectible bottles" that just happen to happen to have a "brown liquid" sealed up in them.  And there are a ton of them listed right now.

Sad, isn't it?

But, in a free society, with lax enforcement of the laws governing such things, it's pretty much expected.

I wouldn't lobby for harsher enforcement, though.    It kinda goes against my grain to have too much 'control' being exerted over one's activities with his/her own personal property.

I abhor the flippers as much as anyone; and would never consider doing such a thing myself.     But, these are my personal views about my own goods.     I'd never tell anyone else what to do with theirs.

That's the way its gotta be.  If folks want to pay more for a Lexus than a Toyota, we have to allow that freedom.  If folks wanna pay 10x the face value for National Championship tickets the day of the game, we have to allow it.  If folks wanna spend $1000 on a pair of boots, we have to allow it.  And if folks wanna pay $2000 for a bottle of PVW, good for them.  I'd never spend that kind of money on any of these things, and that has to be allowed.  I like to gripe about what I believe to be foolish behavior in overpaying for overrated stuff, and that has to be allowed too ;).

So from personal experience (selling an old sealed collectable makers mark bottle on ebay a couple years ago) I can tell you that it takes a bit for your "report the listing" to go through their system.  Someone reported mine and about a month after the bottle was sold, gone, delivered, with a happy new owner, I get a stern "Warning" email from ebay slapping my wrist.  Basically it says "you probably just didn't know about our policies, but if you keep it up, we'll shut down your account".
They almost never actually shut down the listing while its running though.

So if you follow ebay closely, you'll notice the bottle flippers run multiple accounts or change their accounts quite frequently to keep dodging the system.  This is pretty easy to notice, as the seller will use the same backgrounds in their pictures and generally the same format of descriptive text, but will have a different user name each month.

I don't think ebay honestly cares one way or another since they get paid no matter what, but they have to pretend like they care, to satisfy govt. agencies.

Seems as though there are a lot of Weller products listed. And even though it is irritating to not be able to walk into a store and buy those bourbons at retail any longer, I am comfortable in the fact that I can get Old Fitz, Larceny, and the different MM iterations anytime to satisfy my wheater cravings.

Also, I find it quite comical that there are suckers that will pay 10× retail for the old label/bottle of WSR. Awesome!!
