Old Overholt (PA) Age?

First off let me say this is an open bottle and is currently being drunk, not something I'm trying to get a value on/sell. With that out of the way, my friend found a bottle of PA Distilled Old Overholt at her father's house. Apparently it was her aunt's at one point, who didn't drink but kept it for guests.

I did a bit of digging and it looks like it's definitely from before 1987 when Beam took over, but since it says Distilled in PA that mean's it should be from before it was moved to the OGD distillery in Kentucky too, right? It says Distilled in Broad Ford PA and Distributed by National Distillers Products Co along the bottom. Anyone have an idea of what time period this would be?

It's not bottled in bond, it's 86 proof. It's 8 years age stated.

The last picture shows "Quart" above the label and there's no bar code, so wouldn't it be before 1980?

Yup pre '79 actually IIRC, last picture didn't load for me last time.

Ah yes I see Quart on there now too. Pre-1979 that's really cool!

My friend is currently in NY so I don't have direct access to the bottle, but after seeing how excited I got about the whiskey detective work, she's graciously offered to delivered the bottle with it's remaining contents to me. I'll post an update with some more info on the bottle when I get it.

Thanks guys!

Well you know I'm real close to NY so if you need someone to meet your friend to test it out before she travels with it I could make that happen!

  • 2 weeks later...

Received the bottle today with enough left for a few pours! First impression is very good, going to have another glass and try to get some notes together later.

Here's some better photos as well. There was some tape on the bottle that pulled the tax strip off so no shot of that. Do the numbers on the bottom mean anything to anyone?

Tasting notes!

Color: Tawny

Nose: Mint/mentol, raisen, spice, cherry cough syrup

Palate: Sweet, spice, oak, more oak, nuttiness, astringent bitter tea

Finish: Long, oak, fruit, reminds me of cognac or armagnac

That is an awesome looking bottle. It looks one of the numbers is 68 or 69? That should be the number on the die fro the glass mold. This should be the year this was bottled or maybe within a couple years of that.
