Out of curiosity, when people talk prices here is it generally out the door or pre-tax?

I ask because in WA there is a 20.5% sales tax plus $3.77 per liter volume tax. So at $58.99 on the shelf it is $73.91 out the door. That's one reason I avoid "cheaper" bourbon's, because the volume tax somewhat minimizes the price difference out the door.

I think most of the time people are referring to the price the store is charging unless they say OTD. The distributors and retailers can't do anything about high tax or low tax state differences.

FYI, I can usually find Stagg Jr on the shelf for $49.99. Then I have to pay 9.25% sales tax on top of that.

Almost identical cost for me - except I paid 9% sales tax.  Or 54.49 OTD.

Crappy WA and it's sin tax lol.

A lot of the time I try and restrict my purchases to what I can buy at the class six, that way it is tax free.

To the OP's original question, I've had batch 8 and 9 opened at the same time and they are both excellent but, IMO, batch 9 has more spicy/dark fruit character while batch 8 has more vanilla/caramel/butterscotch notes.  I was kind of surprised as I expected them to be more similar.  I can't say one is better than the other - just different.  They're both well worth buying if you can find them.

I hope the OP will report back his impressions once he tastes them.

You're really starting to irritate me, and probably a few others Gee. You best be bringing some of that bounty to Bardstown in April buddy. If not, no Joe's 2018 Weller Blend for you.

Hey Joe,

RHF, ETL and StaggJr are already packed along with 4-6 Loch & K(e)y Society Julio's store picks of OWAs & WA10s.  Bruce T. (2017 BOTY) knows I try not to come in to someone's house with out a contribution or two for the greater good of the whole.

Look forward to meeting all y'all in April at the Sampler in Bardstown.  Who knows what I might talk Harry in WashDC out of in his bunker on the way down . . . .

That's OK Joe, when the Patriots lose this weekend, he'll need that low cost bourbon to drown his sorrows. And as I've already pointed out to GeeTen, bourbon may be the only thing cheap where he lives, so we should count our blessings! [emoji6]

Okay Gee, you've redeemed yourself for now at least. But the proof is in the pudding.   But seriously, I'm really looking forward to meeting you (and SWMBO) in April. :P If everything works out, me thinks we're gonna have some fun. ^_^

FWIW, after consuming half a bottle of this in two days (a record for me), I can now honestly say I like Stagg Jr Batch 9 BETTER than the GTS 2017.  It's waaaaay too easy to sip on, and it doesn’t have the mildly bitter tannin finish that ever-so-slightly diminishes the GTS 2017. In fact, I went out and bought three more bottles of the Batch 9 today to bunker.

I learned a valuable lesson today. After three years of chasing it down, and finally acquiring my first GTS (for $249),  I realized that it was overpriced, overhyped, and not necessary the best bourbon out there.  That in itself was worth paying the price for the GTS. Never again.

My scores:

Stagg Jr Batch 9...93

GTS 2017....90

PS:  Not sure why system keeps underlining GTS every time I type it, but I am unable to remove it

atch is pretty dang close in quality (nose, taste, and finish) to the 2017 GTS I have. Considering I paid $249 for the GTS, I

Those underlines are built into the system by The Boss.    If you hover your cursor over anything that shows up that way, you'll soon know why.    It's an aid for folx who aren't sure about our commonly used acronyms.   ie. BH BT OGD , etc.

While I haven't worked through a bottle of GTS, I had a chance to do a SBS at a bar, I don't know which batch/year for each, but I would have put the GTS at 96 and Stagg Jr at 94. Personally I like a bit of bitter tannin in my whiskey. Anyway, needless to say I find the Stagg Jr an exceptional value and wouldn't pick up a GTS unless I found it at retail. Even in my small town I can find more Stagg Jr than I can reasonably drink (for $52 at that), so there just isn't any reason for me to hunt for unicorns like GTS.

Well, I have been looking for GTS for 3 years - and have NEVER seen it in Middle GA.  When it got here, most places were asking $500-700.  When I found it for $249, it was hard to shell out, but I really wanted to finally get my hands on one so I pulled the trigger. No bars around me offer any of the high end bourbons, so getting a whole bottle was basically my only option.  Glad I did, as it satisfied my need to taste this highly-sought-after unicorn, and has put to bed my need to search for any more unicorns.

Despite living in a small town, we're lucky to have two bars here with rather extensive whiskey selections. Even then, there's a lot of stuff I can't find here, so whenever I travel I make a point of seeking out bourbon bars and trying unicorns that I would otherwise not have access too. I've had a number of $30+ pours that have saved me from buying $300+ bottles.

Oh and just to be clear, I'm not disparaging you for dropping $250 on the GTS, if I had seen that locally I would have been tempted too.

What is the proof on Batch 9? I saw the photo in this thread but I was confused as to which proof belonged to which batch. I saw a bottle at a package store where I'm working (Panama City Fl) and I'm thinking of buying it and flying it back with me to Nashville Tn.

Thanks!

Well I can't report back as having done a side by side because I have not opened my bottles yet.  However,  I have had batch 9 at a bar and it was fantastic.  I had it sbs with bookers and it made the bookers taste like swill in comparison (for the record I like bookers).  It is very smooth for such a high proof.  Someone described it as "way too drinkable" and I couldn't agree more.

I have not seen any reviews on the latest batch.  Has anyone tried batch 9 yet?  My local LS has a couple bottles of batch 8 and 9 and I wanted to see how batch 9 compared.

To me, Batch 9 (131.9) is the best so far - did a blind SBS with my GTS 2017 and Stagg Jr came out as the better tasting bourbon - so I went out and bought three more!
