More McKenna 10, because it's in easy reach. I like it more each time I try it!

Also reflecting on my other hobby, an attached .mp3. That's me on the banjo and my father-in-law singing, friends and family on guitar and base. Fun jam!

Your Love is Like a Flower.mp3

Nothing like mountain music and aged corn whiskey! Thanks for sharing.

Missed the eve working again, but celebrating the first lights of the year with a 2oz sample of GTS 2014 I'd put aside.

I had a pour of Virginia Distillery Highland Malt, then we enjoyed a bottle of Gambino Prosecco

I did blind tastings on consecutive nights with my brother:

12/30

Buffalo Trace PS

CEHT SiB

Elmer T Lee

Rock Hill Farms

12/31

Blantons SFTB

Four Roses PS OESK 8 years 10 months

Belle Meade SiB 9 years

Old Scout SiB 11 years

Both were great fun, although the CEHT SiB tasted like a bad bottle to both of us. Hopefully it changes over time because I have had it before and really enjoyed it.

So what were the results of the tasting? What did you guys prefer?

For me, from best to worst:

Elmer

Buffalo Trace

Rock Hill Farms

CEHT SiB

Blantons SFTB

Old Scout

Belle Meade

Four Roses PS

For my brother:

Rock Hill Farms

Buffalo Trace

Elmer

CEHT SiB

Blantons SFTB

Belle Meade

Old Scout

Four Roses PS

Neither of us had tasted Rock Hill Farms before. He really liked it where I was a bit disappointed. It was good, but did not knock my socks off. I am eager to drink the rest of the bottle and give it a fair chance :) Buffalo Trace holds up very well for a $24 bottle of bourbon. Elmer was really good to me as always and the CEHT really seemed off to both of us.

On the second set, it was close for me between the Old Scout and Blantons SFTB when consumed neat, but water made the Blantons better and the Old Scout worse. The Blantons was 125.6 and the Old Scout only 101.2 so that may explain the differences when taking water. Also in the second set, I think he found the two MGP bourbons relatively similar, but both good. I wish they listed more information on the mash bill for comparison's sake, but you can't have everything I guess. The last bottle of Old Scout SiB I had was fantastic, so this one did not live up to that, but again still good bourbon. I was disappointed by the Four Roses OESK, only because I'm a big Four Roses fan. I really like the standard single barrel and the other private picks I've had have been great (not had OESK before though). This one was solid, but nothing special, so it registers as a disappointment to me. Blantons SFTB was great and got better with one or two drops of water opening it up even more.

These were the first two blind tastings I have done like this and I will say it was very educational (and fun). I'm looking forward to doing more and, in fact, might just run back the first one some time to see if it comes out the same. Four entrants seemed like a good number to do and I think I'll stick with that for future tastings. The first night we both knew what the four entrants were and he correctly identified two while I identified one. The second night I knew what the entrants were and identified one correctly. He did the tasting only knowing the Blantons SFTB was in it, but after shown the four did not identify any exactly (did pick the two MGPs correctly). Certainly interesting to separate out brand perception from what the taste buds tell us.

Little late to the party, but 1000 Stories BB Zinfandel w/ dinner, followed by DN1843 with bourbon balls from BT and Barton as the clock turned over.  A peaceful and tasty night...

Yes you do.

According to someone who knows, the current Rare Breed is Jimmy's favorite.

That is an awesome tip!! Two clarifying questions for you. 1. What do you mean my his favorite?  His favorite Rare Breed so far? His favorite WT on shelf right now in general? And 2. How do I know if I am picking up "the current" Rare Breed? Is there a number or batch or something on the bottle?

It's his favorite of the current Turkey offerings. The current one is 116.8 proof.

Jimmy tends to have a lot of favorites. He has assured me that everything WT makes today is as good or better than anything they have made in the past.

Might be true! He would know... B)

Maybe the there overall quality control and manufacturing processes might have improved. However they’ve raised there Barrel entry proofs several times and don’t offer a lot of there products at the same age that they use to. I think those factors would probably lead to not as good whiskey.

I think mostly he is just proud of what he makes and has made. As well he should be!

He should be. With all that I said I still think they make excellent products.
