Recently picked up a bottle of the JB Distillers Cut, and as I was looking at it noticed what looked like a chunk of pumice in the glass.  Had noticed something similar in a bottle of ECBP a couple of weeks ago. Is this fairly common or something to worry about?

Sounds like flock. Chill filtration removes this and both of the whiskies you mention are not chill filtered. It's nothing to worry about.

This seems unlikely as it is clearly embedded in the glass, to the point that you can see light distortion around the objects.  I will try to get some pictures this evening.

What the flock is going on here? :)  Sounds like the quality control inspector for the bottle manufacturer was imbibing that day. :D

Am I the only one here who inspects several bottles before buying, to make sure I get nice undamaged labels, good wax, good fill level, nice looking glass, etc?

Heck, I take a laser level in the store and line up the bottles and get the one that has 0.0000031536 mls. more in it.  I also only drink from the bottles when the relative humidity is below 41.389573% so as not to have any of that precious juice disappear into the atmosphere. :D

Think of all the "defective" bottles you are leaving for me.  More than once, I've taken one such to the cash/card register and said, "I'll buy this bad one if you give me a discount."  Hard to keep a straight face, but . . .:o

And, no, I've never gotten a discount.

The only defect I've ever found in a bottle is that it just didn't last long enough. :D

  • 4 weeks later...

The camera doesn't do a good job of capturing the light distortion, but as stated earlier these objects are clearly inside the glass.

I would have expected them to go away by now...Try some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads to fix her up.

I can't imagine that this will be an actual thing.

...But, if you're really worried about it, I'd be happy to send you a check to cover the cost of packing and shipping any of 'em to me for proper evaluation and subsequent disposal.   :)

makes sense. If I had a tipple or two, I would probably get emotional and be telling that defective bottle that just because it's different, doesn't mean it's not special!

Glass is generally non porous, so anything encased in glass will not be able to leach out.
