I believe several of you have attended bourbon dinners with Jimmy Russell. I have the opportunity to do so soon. Any words of advice or tips on what to expect?

Come with yer happy hat in place.   :D

Jimmie is a treat, and 1-of-a-kind curmudgeon (in the best possible way).     His stories always entertain.   His plain-spoken insights into distilling Bourbon (indeed into all things Bourbon!) are always insightful.      And, he can poke fun at anybody and anything, including himself.

You'll have a great time!!!

Tell him how much you like the current Rare Breed and you are sure to get a smile.

Be on time, one I went to half the people just wandered in half way through which I thought was kind of rude, as they start on time. The one I went to was very well done, nice FR tasting and good food. Al is great, happy to pose for pictures and sign the book that they give you charting his career for the last 50 years. He was also signing Al Young bottles if people bought them.

Only contentious point was when he talked about doubling capacity, kind of waffled a question about maintaining quality and one about does that mean a doubling in LE bottles as well.

But overall a great evening.

It would be quite entertaining for Al Young to show up and sign FR bottles at a Jimmy Russell event.

Thanks for the tips, turns out it’s Eddie.  I picked up a RRSB just in case it seems cool to ask him to sign it.  Was looking at a WT Diamond, but it’s $125 and the reviews are not great, plus it already has a nice signature.

truth is my favorite WT offering is 101.

Well, a more pleasant evening would be hard to imagine.  Eddie is a charming and knowledgeable guy more than happy to share his thoughts on any subject, to the point that I felt guilty asking him questions.  Dinner was Four courses with whiskey for each.  The final pour of the night was decades, and I have to say, it was very, very good.  My first taste of it.  Th other drinks were great as well (several cocktails and a neat pour of rare breed).  One cocktail involved WT101rye and duck fat!

WT (and the Russell family) is a national treasure to be sure.

Back in June I went to a dinner that honored both Al Young AND Jimmy. You would have been covered at that one!

Glad to hear you had a good time and enjoyed the WT Decades.  I'm retiring at the end of April and my work gave me some money to buy a nice bottle and I ended up with a bottle of Decades which along with a bottle of EC 18 will be opened on the evening of Monday, April 30 to celebrate my retirement.

Was talking to a fellow bourbon buddy at work and was telling him about my bottles and invited him to my house on the day I retire.  He said it was too bad that we couldn't find a 31 year old bourbon (the number years I've worked here).  I then realized that the Decades I bought is 13 years old and the EC 18 is of course 18 years old and when I added them up it was, of course 31 years.  Must be a sign from God.

A local bar in Houston area bought a bottle of this 36 year old and did a break even price event on it this past weekend.  I know 3 guys that tried and universal all hated it.  They also had the Redemption 18 year Rye that received excellent feedback.
