I definitely need some Wild turkey. I guess I was under the impression (no idea where I got it?) that Wild Turkey was kind of a cheap, not so great product. Did it used to be that way years ago? I'm clearly wrong as I had some Rare Breed at my Uncle's over Christmas and it was very good. It's on my wish list.

On the contrary. ‘Dusty’ Wild Turkey is some of the most saught after Bourbon. As my buddy rarebird101 says WT has the reputation of the whiskey for ‘bikers, fraternity boys, and rockers’. For my taste and wallet, Russells Reserve single barrels are one of the best deals in bourbon right now. Around 9 years old, non chill filtered, 110 proof. WT barrel entry proof is 115 so these bottles are very close to barrel proof.

Wild Turkey has always been good, but you are not alone in you preconceptions. WT101 has been a favorite for me for nearly 20 years but for certain the first time I had it the proof seemed very extreme. High proof was something at the time I associated with cheap because of products like Everclear, but despite the "better" bourbons people would pour me in my early 20's I never did understand why they were "better" than WT101, and in fact I don't believe they were even now.

I passed up a RRSB store pic last week, mainly because I hesitated at the $50 price & was in a hurry to get back on the road (it was at a LS I passed en route to see my ailing pop). Probably should have picked it up. I also know of a possible RB 108, & I should have seen if it was still around, but that would have meant taking a different route. Ill be be driving down to see him again in the next couple weeks, maybe I should make it a Turkey hunt.

That's a great price on RRSiB. Not sure you're going to find it anywhere else cheaper than that.

Any reason why people often have that impression? I mean, every time I mention WT people start cracking brown paper bag jokes. Irritating...

Others are more qualified to answer this question than me, but I think it goes back a while to a time long before the boom when people were looking for smooth easy drinking whiskey and Wild Turkey was out there with a very bold and spicy product at a higher proof. When 80 proof easy drinking was considered dignified, WT was coming in at higher proofs and doing it their way. WT101 was super cheap (still is today relatively) and was a quick and fast way to get drunk. It also seems like one of those whiskies you can always find at a dive bar. (Remember that its nickname is the Kickin' Chicken). Despite that reputation, it's a fine whiskey that is fun to sip at a great price.

I took some WT101 with me to a job site in Canada a couple years ago. A bunch of tough salt of the earth construction workers looked at me like I was crazy when I drank it neat. They were all adding water and ice and even drinking it with Sprite. I was the bold crazy guy going out on a limb and drinking it neat without any concern. It was pretty funny to see their reaction.

And here I thought "Kickin Chicken" was FC's nickname. (Thought I'd post a pic of the back of my FC t-shirt, just because I like it)

Welcome to the  board,  WL!

I'd try to get representative examples of each of the major bourbon distillers.    From your list it doesn't appear you have any juice from Wild Turkey and Old Forester,  which just happen to be my two favorite bourbon brands.    Try a WT Rare Breed and a OF Statesman,  I'd say,  and get change (albeit not much) back from your C-note.
