I have a 2L Barrel to age cocktails in. About 5 weeks ago I put in ingredients for a Manhattan. Last weekend I tried it, and it didn’t seem like it had taken on much of a barrel flavor. Has anyone else Barrel aged a Manhattan? If so, how long did you age it for?

PM Josh, he's certainly done this with excellent results.

Thanks for the advice....I’m new to the site so I’m not sure who Josh is or how to PM. Can you help me with that? Thanks in advance.

I’ve barrel aged a few old fashioned and a black manhattan, I’ve found that the barrel marries the flavors more and mellows out the taste

How long did you keep them in the barrel before they were done?

About a month, giving the barrel a 1/4 turn each week

  • 3 months later...

I don't have vary many batches under my belt, but I have a 1L barrel and found that 2-3 weeks was good for me to make a barrel aged old-fashioned and get good flavor.  After the barrel was used a few times, I let it go longer, say 5-6 weeks (tho' sometimes that's because I forget about it).

Basically, the best thing to do is to take a small sample every so often and when you get to a flavor profile you like, empty the barrel into a glass bottle.  I save the bottle the bourbon originally came in for just that purpose.
