Last night I had the opportunity to help pick a barrel of Knob Creek Rye for my local bottle shop.  Included is a pic of the sample kit that KC sends to retailers so they can pick their favorite barrel of 3 that are offered.  Two of the samples were similar in taste - and the other was a real dog.  The samples are sent in a beautiful wooden presentation case, engraved on the front - really over the top.

We chose the highest proof (128) sample.  It was quite warm going down, but not HOT, somewhat spicy, with a long rich finish.  Pretty damn tasty.  The bottles should arrive in a few weeks.  I thought you fellas would be interested in seeing the process of choosing a barrel.

Cheers

Very interesting - thanks for sharing. When I dream of my opportunity to pick a barrel it usually goes something like this. The master distiller, myself, and team of friends scour the rick house tasting hundreds of barrels to find the perfect one. The one where the barrel was coopered from that special oak tree with perfect soil and sun conditions. The whiskey batch was flawless and this barrel just so happened to be stored in the perfect conditions. On top of this we are there when the barrel is aged to perfection. My personal, perfect bourbon that now fills my bunker as a lifetime supply.

Thanks for crushing my dreams.

Very nice presentation.

Was any age information given?

No age - All the info given was listed on the sample bottles.

That is a cool presentation (agree - seems over the top, but hey - nice keepsake!)  What proof will it be bottled at?

Thanks for sharing your experience picking one of these. Looks like they do a pretty nice job with the taster kits. My local bourbon shop didn’t finish the ER10 samples BT sent him for his most recent barrel selection and he let me taste them. It was a blast. There was one real dog in the bunch as well - I wonder if distilleries throw a cruddy one in there for perspective.

As for age, the Lot Number on the sample label should indicate the barreling date so you can work forwards from there to determine the age. For the one you chose with Lot #12L10, it was put into the barrel December 10, 2012 (12 = 2012, L = 12th letter of alphabet meaning 12th month of year, 10 = day of month) so it’s a little over 5 years old and of course will be a little older still when bottled. Not too shabby!

Ace Spirits recently got a barrel of this in, and I think they ship to most states. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I'm tempted.

Beam does a great job with all of their tasting kits. I've been involved with several store picks of Beam single barrel products, and I'm always impressed with the tasting kit that is sent...BT not so much.
