I'm sure asked before, but what to look for in KY??

Hi all,

found a couple of older posts about this, but figured I would get the most current opinions since it seems that some of the most wanted from an earlier post (AAA 10yr) have been discontinued.  Bottom line, my friend is ona work trip to TN, andwill be heading back to WI via Lexington and Louisville.  It looks like the Liquor Barns of the interstate in Lex and Louisville will be his best bet (please also send sugesstions if there is another good LS off the 75 or 265).  So to the question, what are the best bottles he should be on the lookout for (mainly so he can bring them back for me!) that you can't find in most places?  Are any versions of Weller readily available down there?  Thanks for any help!

I don’t live in KY but if ever I make the trip down there I’m bringing home cases of VOB and HH BiB

Weller and most BT products are scarce. Even Blantons seems to be hard to find in KY. Funny that 20 minutes outside of Frankfort, a store had EHTaylor SmB for $109.

Not too familiar with Lex and Louisville markets.

1792 225th anniversary ($50) is KY only and I believe HHBIB may be as well.

Absolutely agree. Also try JTS Brown. It's about 10 to 12 a bottle. If you are looking for more expensive limited additions, Kentucky sends most out of state. If you want good value bourbon at cheap prices, Kentucky is the place.

Ditto, if it's an LE or seasonal it's most always harder to find in KY, and almost as likely pimped at 2-10 times suggested list.  However the ones with limited KY/IN/few other state area/regional release like HH BiB, VOB BiB, OFitz BiB (the original if still in production, not the recently announced LE @ 5x the price), some of the Willetts, etc are more readily available and reasonably priced.

Price-wise, Total Wine (@ 265 & Brownsboro Rd), blows everyone else in L-ville out of the water - by $5-10 per 750.   Many/most all the non-LE product lines from B-F, HH, 4R, Will, Bull, MM, Barton/VOB, many smaller craft/NDPs, (and way-too-many of TW's store brand stuff) are usually available.  For at least BT/ER stuff you'll need to hit the LB one exit south (@ 265 & Westport).  Hit TW first then follow up with LB for anything not at TW.   There are quite a few LBs around L-ville and they don't have similar stocking, and Westport W&W is supposed to be good too, but I've yet to stop in there.

I’d be on the lookout for store picks. Maybe some of the KY guys can share. I’m a big four roses and russells reserve fan so that is what I’d try and pick up.

Westport Liquor has several store picks that they will allow you to taste before you buy.    Last week they had ECBP that was quite possibly the best I have ever had. It was 10 year 9 months $37 tax included. They also had a WTKS single barrel store pick that was nice at $60 tax included.   Also picked up a couple of HH BIB 6 year at $13 with tax.    Happy hunting!

ECBP for $37, I'd be buying a case at that price. Best price I've seen is $60.

You had to have meant Small Batch and not Barrel Proof?  All the BP I've seen so far is 12yr and in the $55-60+ range, while a ps SmB would generally fall right in the $35-40 range.  Otherwise I need a fast pilgrimage back to L-ville....

Can someone recommend a good liquor store in Bardstown? Would I find most Heaven Hill products stocked there?  Or is Louisville a better option?

Pretty much any store in the Louisville, Bardstown, Elizabethtown area is going to have HH.  Our Liquor Barn always has a good amount in stock, including the BIB.  You can find some very good PS of KC SiB around here too.  Liquor Barn has a 13 y.o. right now, at $44.99 it is a steal as far as I'm concerned.

Would you happen to know if I will find VOBBIB or EarlyTimes BIB down there?

Price-wise, Kroger, because they aren't permitted to screw over the bourbon tourists by corporate, like the few that are close to the square (and another not far from Kroger) take every opportunity to do.   Unfortunately they also don't have the most expansive selection, but they're a good place to start.  Bardstown Wine & Spirits is south of the parkway on 150 and has struck me as fairly within reason the few times I've been in.  Keystone on the east side might be one to check again.

I liked it much better than Statesman even though it’s only 90 proof. I sampled it in the store and haven’t opened my bottle yet.   This store pick Single Barrel was from warehouse B floor 8.  $48 tax included.

Thanks, will try those!

I remember seeing some VOB BIB but I honestly haven't looked for the ET.

This came out maybe two years ago. We travel quite a bit and I have never seen this anywhere. Even on websites it's always out of stock. It might not be that good. Guess I may never know. The VOB BIB has become a favorite.

I talked with a couple of salesmen/distributors that I know at a tasting Thursday night. The ET BIB was a limited release last year, and so was the Jim Beam Distillers Cut. Not much, if any of the ET BIB made its way to stores around here. I myself know of only one bottle. There were some minor problems with the Beam Distillers Cut. To make a long story short, the distributor kinda screwed up, and there are cases of it sitting in their warehouse.  When more of it hits the shelves here, maybe the stores will put it on sale.  Hey, it could happen.

Thank you very much for the info on ET BIB. It's funny, Distiller's Cut is everywhere here! I could get cases of it if I wanted. I will be traveling in a couple weeks and will keep looking for ET.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll give the nod to Total Wine and more.  Great selection and the best prices by a long shot.  If you want Blanton's you'll probably have to visit the gift shop sry Buffalo Trace in Frankfort.  It's the only place that I've even SEEN a bottle in the last 8 months.
