The word I heard was the 7-10 year is being batched now so the bottles aren’t on shelves yet.

It all makes sense.  It would not surprise me if there is an age statement as part of a new marketing campaign.  Fingers crossed.

If they do an age statement, I hope they don't jack up the price too much.  I love getting WT101 for under $20...

My thoughts exactly! I got a liter for $26 the other day and that's a deal for these parts.

Let’s just hold off on this age statement talk. This is how rumors inadvertently get started.

I’d be really surprised if they added an age statement. There’s no reason to at this point.

I think the best news here is that their production has improved to where it gives them more discretion in selection. That should hopefully translate to an improvement in taste or quality, irrespective of age.

 Agree w/ Flahute and Charlutz

i think anticipating an age statement is ‘hopeful thinking’ best case right now.

To me, the take away is WT is finally starting to catch up stock wise and dont have to put out 6 year old juice. A batch of 7-10 year old barrels for a flagship line is pretty impressive.

It should also be noted, Bruce (Eddies son and Jimmy grandson) is apparently off the road and more involved in the day to day distilling. This is a good thing IMO.

Yes this exactly, the depth of inventory to allow for tailoring the profile vs. just trying to keep up with demand is much more important to me than a specific number on a label. RB is NAS though its well known what the components are (or are purported to be) regardless the most significant factor is, its just delicious whiskey, so is 101. These reports only mean better things ahead. Unless the demand outstrips supply again but the boom is mature enough that the added capacity from a few years ago may be hitting a point of equilibrium with market demand, at least I hope so.

I'm excited to buy a bottle of WT101 again. I don't think I've purchased a bottle in a year or two because the last one I had was pretty young tasting. I have some 200ml "Old No. 8 Brand" bottled in 1997 that will make for a good SBS.

That's what I like about Wild Turkey, it gets older man, but the label still states no age...

Alright, alright, alright

I've been excited by the news of older barrels in the 101 for 2018.

I found a couple stores with cache of 101 handles with the LL/G date code.

Just opened the first bottle tonight.  Need to put it thru the paces before making judgements.  On first pour, it is just as good as 101 always is.

Will certainly enjoy getting to know this bottle.  Plan to go back for more.

Slainte!

Well looks like Cowdery has the myth, the truth, and the new label (back label) all together on his blog. He feels that we have been dis'd. With the high rye statement and the mention that the whiskey could be aged for "up to 6-8 yrs" he's left wondering WHY? Good research by Wade, and a great article by Chuck. Thanks!

I'll stick with my previous post "fine whiskey regardless".

Well in fairness, Chuck did state in his article that it was actually Wade Woodward that did the leg work and published his findings first.

WT really threaded the needle on this one and I mean that in the most critical way possible. By combining the rule allowing straight bourbon to not have an age statement if it’s 4+ y.o. with the allowance of an inconspicuous general description, they’ve created a very misleading label. I don’t think “up to” is what the TTB had in mind and how they approved it is beyond me. Shame of it is that the deception was unnecessary. I don’t know if it will win over any new customers, but it certainly has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Just a couple things to add.

1) I really like Wade’s blog and he is the whiskey consumers best friend and advocate. I did notice that the submission date of the ttb he linked to ( https://www.ttbonline.gov/colasonline/viewColaDetails.do?action=publicFormDisplay&ttbid=16006001000132 ) is Jan of 2016. I agree that the ‘up to 6-8 years’ thing is dodgy at best trying to appear as an age statement with out actually being one.

The info from Bruce and the above ttb filing might not be mutually exclusive.

I can’t help but think if Jimmy and Eddie had their way 8/101 and 12/101 would return but the marketing folks may out vote them.

Also, did y’all see this picture that Wild Turkey put out on social media?

I’m sure that if they had their way both of them would have more hair and be 40 pounds lighter, too.  But just like bourbon today, you play the hand dealt.  It’s easy to blame marketing folks for every ill in the whiskey business, but most decisions there are a group effort involving every department, and with the best interests of the company in mind.  The marketing folks are  just on the point to the consumer, and take the fire...even after being tasked to at times put the lipstick on the pig...

Not sure why the 'new' back label is stirring up things, near as I can tell it is identical to the one on a year old bottle I have here.

Will they accept up to 15-30 dollars for a bottle?

LOL.  Literally.  Wife in the other room asked if I was OK, and cat came into the kitchen, figuring the noise meant "FOOD".
