Other than most of the crap.... er, craft stuff, I don't think I've ever experienced more than tour-sourced tonque-tickle of anything MGP - gonna have to rectify that someday....

I’ll second that. I’ve got a single cask nation Turkey pick that needs to be shared.

I recommend a multiple day meeting since there's 2 Lawrenceburg cults :)

I have declared an umbrella cult that covers both, but yes, multiple days still required!

I've never bought a bottle of 4R for myself and never had a taste of it. I just don't like the specs of their 3 standard offerings or maybe a better way to put it is I like the specs of all their competitors better. Why pay $20 for an 80 proof when I can get a 7 year old 101 proof for $16 or a 100 proof NCF 5 to 6 year old for $17. I can name similar examples for the small batch and single barrel. I have multiple bottles of HH, BT, WT & JB. Each of those have had several expressions seem worth my money at the time of purchase, but 4R hasn't. I'm sure I'll get around to trying it but no time soon.

Nice explanation.  I was going to click the thumb but saw Steve/flahute's follow-up, which I was also going to thumb, and figured a little explanation, which can safely be ignored, was warranted/unwarranted (pick both).

Because they taste different.

Different LY.  Oh, yeah: They do taste differently OR they are different.  Whatever.  It's 12:30am here.  What am I doing up?  Just have to stop sipping Booker's neat.

ON TOPIC - Maybe it's time I tried some Dickel stuff again.  Some of you guys are really positive about it, and it's been awhile since I bought some, and I'm older so I don't really remember what I was drinking so . . .

Steve, You can’t learn to like it if you don’t continue to try different variations of it. I’ll admit that Dickel No12 and No8 have that particular flavor that you don’t like right up front, but the older stuff is much more subtle, and sometimes hardly present at all.

Steve,  was that barrel whiskey I hooked you up with a Dickel or MGP batch?  Whatever, I loved it!

More than likely it was Dickel, since many of the Barrell Bourbons are from Dickel and very tasty. I’m pretty confident that my current open bottle (batch #11) is from Dickel, although at first I wasn’t as confident because the tell-tale Dickel profile that Steve doesn’t like was not really present.

It was MGP.

Jeff - this is the stuff that gets finished in used barrels hence the name Whiskey and not bourbon.

Barrels is good about listing state of distillation on the label.

My group has a Barrel Bourbon pick that is MGP. You are correct though that most of them are Dickel.

Aside: I did a Magnus pick with my local store. Magnus also sources from MGP and Dickel. We tried two Dickel barrels and both were very strong in the vitamin flavor. Our own WhiskeyBlender (Nancy) was present and she along with the other blender there tasted it as well.

I was incorrectly assuming Paddy was using the term "whiskey" in a generic sense, so thanks for the clarification.

I knew what it was (I bunkered the crap out of it).:D

The reason I brought it up, was the grain essence you picked up right away.  Even at that age (which was 7 years)!

Used barrel and all, that bad boy was still a very complex pour (even with that faint grain note).

The previous umpteen posts is why I love SB. :D Someone here once said about our bourbon endeavor, "If you aren't having fun, you ain't doing it right." This is fun.  Carry on.  :D
