It looks like the US and South Africa require a 750ml bottling as standard from what I have been able to find in older threads. Does anyone know how and why did this came about?

Not sure why Europe goes with 700 ml. Back in the day we went with half pints, pints, fifths, quarts, half gallons. A fifth was 4/5 of a quart or 25.6 OZ. When we attempted to convert to metric we went with 200 ml, 375 ml, 750 ml (a 750 is 25.4 OZ), Liters and 1.75 liters.

These were the closest equivalent to what we were doing before.

I suspect a bunch of old timers fussed a bit at the conversion as many still use the pint, fifth, quart etc when getting their liquor.

Thanks OH.  Do you know about what time period the change was made? Also were Europes sizes alwYs standardized prior to the US change to metric?

1975 for the US. Again not sure about Europe.
Mr. Google could probably help there

I would say the world needs to get on the same page about this - but if we asked we'd probably lose 50ml down to 700, ha.

But, of course we'd also realize the commensurate lowering of the price, and thus allow for a greater number of bottles to be purchased with the same budgeted cash, RIGHT?    Right?    Huh?    ....(crickets)....
