Skinsfan1311
I've seen them around, but have never pulled the trigger, because there are so many varieties. If I had to try one, which one do you suggest? Small Batch? Single Barrel? Rye? Sour Mash? I'm up for anything, but it should be something ubiquitous, (I live in Maryland) Thanks! Radioyada
Select any of them that are available to you and start from there. I would like to know where you are seeing all the varieties, as most of us lucky ones only see one or two selections on a store’s shelf at any given time. Let us know what is available near you. fishnbowljoe
In order in which I’d try them: Small Batch Single Barrel Barrel Proof Straight Rye The Sour Mash is no longer available. It was a one off. Biba! Joe

I was seeing different ones at different liquor stores. I didn't pay close attention. I will now!

JCwhammie
I'd go 1. Small batch 2. Rye I currently have a bottle of SiB, and it's fantastic. There can be a lot of barrel variation, though. Unless you can find it at retail (~$55) I'd pass. The SmB is probably my favorite of the mashbill #1. I've not had the rye, but I've heard good to great things about Barton rye, which it is.
Bob_Loblaw
Eh Taylor Single Barrel is absolutely fantastic IMO. Maybe I have only had great barrels, but this one has never disappointed. The Small Batch is fantastic as well and significantly cheaper. If you find the BP at MSRP snap it up, but likely you are not seeing this one on the shelves. Not had the Rye, it was $70 back when the SmB and SiB were $34.99 and $51.99 and sat on shelves so I never tried it. 18 months later its a complete ghost.
mal00768
I had a really disappointing bottle of the SiB. The small batch was much better.
DanP
I lucked upon a bottle of small batch a couple of months ago and I would echo the sentiment that it’s fantastic. Actually, I’ve been drinking it very sparingly as my anxiety level goes up as the fluid level lowers in the bottle.
EarthQuake
Small Batch first as others have said. Single Barrel is good but not worth the extra $20 in my opinion (unless maybe you get a really special barrel). Barrel Proof is good as well if you can find it at retail, but it's very similar to Stagg Jr and you can find that easier and for significantly less money. As mentioned, the Rye is (reportedly) Barton distilled rye, so the flavor profile is nothing at all like the rest of the CEHT line. It's solid if you like rye, but at $70 or less there are a lot of good options for rye whiskey. So I would only go with that if you drink a lot of rye and have tried most of the regularly available rye brands.

I had a couple pours from a Single Barrel once that was outstanding, but all the rest have not been worth paying 2x the Small Batch. However, if you see BP at retail, grab it. Great trade bait! jwperry
I've only had the single barrel, small batch and rye. I liked the small batch over my single barrel. The rye is probably my favorite rye. Definitely top 3
Jazzhead
Small batch first, especially at that full-throated 100 proof. Small batch is a blend of barrels, the flavor profile is intentional and repeatable. The single barrel is the "naked" expression. The fun is to compare, but like Dexter Gordon said, to play the solo right you first gotta know the lyrics
yobber76
I agree with most above. SmB is excellent for the money, and it can be found with a little work. I got lucky and found a SiB at a Total Wine late last year, it was excellent. Have found another since.
Jazz June
I'm surprised any of these are easily found in Maryland (assuming you mean close to MSRP). People hunt them pretty hard in Virginia. I would agree that starting with the small batch is clearly your best bet. My more specific thoughts: Small Batch (MSRP $40): quite good for the MSRP price and a noticeable step up from standard Buffalo Trace. Single Barrel (MSRP $60): in my experience, varies quite a bit. I have had some good barrels, but also some that would approach poor (not undrinkable, but very disappointing). Barrel Proof (MSRP $70): I have only had bar/restaurant pours, but liked them quite a bit. I don't think I would chase this, but at MSRP I would definitely be a buyer. I believe this is only released once a year. I also wonder why this release exists as Taylor is BT's bottled in bond line and they have Stagg Jr. for a comparable product, but more barrel proof bourbon is a good thing. Rye (MSRP $60): Also quite variable in my experience (despite being batched). Some bottles tasted great to me, others some what flat. To be fair, I have not opened one in a few years so can't speak to more recent issue. To my knowledge, this is the only way to get a straight rye distilled at Barton (at a minimum, here in the Mid-Atlantic). There are better ryes for less, but when this is on target, I rate it worth the money.

I don't see a lot of it in the Baltimore area, but I do see it. I'll be sure to double check the prices, against your post, the next time I see it. Thanks! Kepler
I like the Small Batch just fine if reasonably priced. Also a big fan of the barrel proof.
geclbxf
I'm a fan of the whole line. The barrel proof I find to be fantastic, less of a bomb than Stagg Jr can be, and more approachable neat. The rye recently came to Pennsylvania on line, and I got lucky and was able to snag 2. It was better than I remembered. In Ohio, it is almost unavailable in the wild.
