My stash was cleared out almost 7 years ago. I sold it due to divorce. I usually have 2 bottles on hand most of the time. I just buy as needed these days.

I recently sold 700+ bottles from my wine collection.   Lemme catch my breath before I figure out where I’m at with the brown liquor collection.

Shame on me for not being OCD enough to create and maintain a credible list of the bourbon/rye/whiskeys.  Just too simple to buy, stash in one of the cellars, and pop/pour when the mood strikes.

Then again, it’s like an Easter egg

hunt sometimes when I stumble upon a bottle or three that I forgot I had acquired...... ?

Unfortunately I am OCD enough.  This is my list from last Christmas.  I print it out so my brother-in-law, nephew, etc. have a list to peruse when the are here on Christmas Eve.  It's probably a bit out of date now, but it's close.

Okay, here’s my list. I’m not sure it’s 100% accurate because I kinda hurried through all the moving, cleaning and counting.

Open bottles-21  Bottles in the bunker-90

As a side note here, of the 21 open bottles I have open,13 are from the Buffalo Trace distillery. Of the 90 bottles in my bunker, 58 are from Buffalo Trace. What can I say?  ^_^

I think you go with getting rid of the bourbon... I’ll happily come help with such a task. Hahaha

Not likely now that you've publicly identified yourself as a flipper.

Woahhh I never said I was a flipper. I don’t mark up bottles, sell them, ect. If gathering bottles to gift or trade for things not available in my area labels me as a flipper... I think we should define flipper better.

Im not the man posting PVW for $1700. But trading a Stagg JR for a KC 14yr pick I can’t get here doesn’t seem to be a crime in my book.

And for someone who has probably the largest collection on here... maybe people who encourage the upsale of buying secondary market may be the problem?

I’m sure your recent mail call was all at MSRP right?

I've never bought or sold on the secondary market and pay retail (but typically less). It all gets billed against projects-- so the paperwork is important for the IRS and insurance company.

Personally I don’t like trading, not necessarily for morality reasons but it kind of ruins the hunt and the hobby for me. Especially for places like PA where things are limited, it’s really cool to find something even bottom shelf that we will never see here. Trading would spoil that for me. My two cents...

Certainly swapping bottles is not nearly as bad as purely flipping bottles you bought off the shelf on the secondary market for a profit.  But for me, intent at the time of purchase matters, so clearing retail shelves of something like Stagg Jr for trade bait later is still in some ways a lesser form of "flipping."  Just my opinion.

Obviously swapping amongst friends or fellow bourboners with bottles you already owned and were not purchased with intent of turning over later,... well that's just good clean fun, and part of our hobby.

Knowing what your stash is probably looking like these days, I got a chuckle out of your response! Of course my response is ? ?

I admittedly have a few bottles— but I’ve reached the breaking point where I’m sh*t out of space, so I’ve either got to put the brakes on buying or eliminate the bourbon to focus on Scotch. Not an easy task given the local feeding frenzy.

Just a few Dave? ?
I guess I have no room to talk though! ?

Too many to count.

Took me about three years to get my first 500 back in 2011-2013, but I couldn't/wouldn't do that today. I was very aware of the closing motion of the door of Aladdin's cave, so I hustled.

That said, I had a pretty crazy opportunity last year, and bought about 250 bottles of extinct rum - THAT won't happen again. Normally these days, 50/yr is more my speed, and it will decrease every year. Soon there won't be any rum for sale that I want to buy, so...

At 50/yr I'm in balance for now, since that's about what my guests and I consume in a year.

About 170 bourbons, ryes, American whiskies and Tennessee whiskies on the shelf and mostly open.  In the bunker I have about 70-80 of the same type whiskies.  Most are back ups, but there are a few one offs I've just not opened as of yet.  I reckon I have enough whiskey on hand to last me the rest of my life, but I do share it willingly with friends, so this combined with a rather large debilitating case of FOMO keeps the bunker growth on an upward trend.

Seriously though, I did finally finish getting my spreadsheet up to date earlier this year (trying to remain busy in retirement I suppose!) so I could crunch some numbers! We talking bourbon? American whiskey? Whiskey in general? Distilled spirits in general? Everything but the kitchen sink?

Should I count bottles I have paid for but are still en route? Seems like there are always a few bottles en route lately!

Mine hovers right around 22-25 bottles, with usually 5-7 open.  Thankfully, that is about all I can handle with space limitations, as almost all are located on a single shelf in my pantry.  I did start stashing some Blantons/Blantons Gold in another cabinet in the bedroom, because the squat little bottles fit nicely, particularly while still in their boxes, but even that won't accommodate more than another bottle or two.

So, not much of a stash.  But I only really feel compelled to stash things that I will be unlikely to buy (i.e. anything over $100), or at least have a really difficult time getting, again.  Plan is to keep a revolving door of accessible/available opens while stashing 1-2 really good bottles per year, and once that exceeds my current storage capacity, figure it out as I go.
