I ran across a FR single barrel store pick today. It did not have the PS on the neck and wasnt Barrel Proof. Definitely was a private selection.  Is that normal? Ive only seen barrel proof FR store picks until today. OBSV i think it was

They do OBSV 100 proof barrel picks. I believe these are picks based on mailed samples. Barrel proof picks can be any of the 10 recipes, including OBSV. Historically I think that if you didn’t travel to FR to do a barrel pick in person they’d only give you one of these OBSV/100s, based on mailed samples. Not sure what they’re currently doing.

Interesting BIB. I was pumped about getting the PS , one of those you drive a little bitnout of your way to get.. but then super disappointed to find it wasnt BP. I ended up not buying it but ended up with something way better.

Historically, they will let you pick a 100p 6-8y OBSV barrel in person as well.

Anything in the barrel proof selection historically has to be over 8 years old.

The first time I went to pick a couple barrels, I begged relentlessly to get our 7y+ OBSV at cask strength.  It was so damn good that as soon as I tried it, I put my glass down, declared it the winner and didn’t bother tasting the other 4 barrels.  The others looked at me like I was crazy (including the 4R reps), but continued on without me.

They eventually caught up and we bought the first barrel.

It was still very good proofed down, but the memory of that sip outta the cask is forever burned into my mind as some of the best 4R I’ve ever tried.

So I guess my point is, don’t ignore those picks, just because they aren’t BP.  Some of them are truly exceptional barrels of OBSV, and usually priced in line with normal shelf stock single barrel.

There certainly are some good OBSV/100s. Also important to note, some FR barrels have pretty low proofs compared to other majors, partially due to the single level rickhouses. Those crazy hazmat type proof releases come from taller facilities that get a lot hotter. So I guess my point is, some of the OBSV/100s aren’t really watered down too much from what barrel proof would be anyway

As BIB stated,  FR’s does do OBSV 100 proof private picks. While not privy to any specific information, I’ve had a few over the years. They were all pretty good, but one was an anomaly. It was great. It reminded me of an amped up FRYL. This story reminds me of another one that relates to 0895’s post.

I was on a tour at Cox’s Creek a number of years ago with p_elliott. They were dumping barrels for the Yellow Label that day. Paul and I were handed small cups and got to have some right out of the barrel they were dumping. Fun stuff, cause we just stuck our cups under the bung hole as the whiskey came pouring out. We had a taste and just looked at each other. Big smiles broke out on our faces. We both though  that this was one of the best bourbons we’d ever tasted. Paul and I agreed that if we could have, we’d have bought that barrel right then and there. Yes, it was that good. We were talking about it later in the day and we both could have kicked ourselves for not asking what recipe it was.

Well.. I wish I’d grabbed it. It was only $50. I will be headed back that way soon enough. Thanks for the info fellas. I did manage to get a 10.8 yr OBSQ today though.

I echo the others. Although I don't own one of those 100 proofer PS, the one I tasted in a bar was fantastic. It's been a few years so unfortunately I don't remember which recipe it was. I wouldn't let the 100 proof stop me from buying it either.

I could be wrong but it's my understanding that the 100 proofers are all OBSV, including the PS ones.

Good call.  I believe it was OBSV actually so you are probably right.
