What Bourbon Are You Drinking Today (Fall 2020)

Started off with a 1-2 punch of FRSBS and OF 1920.  Can't imagine much better for readily available, sub $55 bottles.

After changing the brakes on my old Yukon today and a second run back to AutoZone for a torx T-55 socket (who thought THAT was a good idea instead of a hex head bolt?!?!) I needed/deserved this. My back is gonna feel this one tomorrow.

Long day today. Shopping: Binny’s, Best Buy, grocery store. Yard work: leave raking, plant trimming, fertilizing the lawn with winterizer. More shopping: Home Depot for ten 40# bags of top soil and new window well covers. More yard work: leveling out the ground on one side of our house with the aforementioned top soil, and watering the lawn to help the winterizer take hold. After an early supper, helped with some chores around the house. Just now helping finish up some laundry. I have the district feeling that a climb up the Weller ladder may commence shortly.

You have the "district" (sic) feeling?  You sure you hadn't already STARTED climbing that ladder?  BTW, do you work for bourbon?  I have some yard projects you'd be PERFECT for.

 

Had to rub bunches of IcyHot on a hamstring this PM after said yard work.  Boy Howdy, that witch hazel REALLY screws up my palate.  Had to switch to an Irish to regain my taste.  Could not even taste the WT RB 116.8 I pulled off the shelf.  I was going to do aSBS with a 375 of 112.8, but . . .

 

Maybe tomorrow.  After all, tomorrow is an other day!

I'm not sure my back agrees. I watched John Wick 3 tonight for a dose of 'Merica..even tho I guess he is Balarussian. Some KC120 PS is taking the edge off.

Its no secret that Im a bit crazy, but Blanton’s has not been very good for the past year (bottles dated 12/19-current).

There was a cycle of bad Blanton’s back in 2015 that swore me off of it for awhile.

And here we are again....

 

I quit buying it again for the time being.

I just opened a 1/10/20 Blanton's last night and thought it was pretty good. Not sure which one of us is crazy.  Had a great nose. The nose took me right back to the bottling hall and the moment I had my entire head inside one of the dump tanks.

Steve, I've been impressed several times.  You go to a barrel selection and say none of the samples make the grade.  Well done

Then, when you do pick a barrel - it means something.

My most recently purchased Blanton's is by far the worst Blanton's I've ever tasted.  It's a regular stock bottling not a PS. Dry and tannic and not a very pleasant pour. I was surprised too. One more bad one like this one and I'm dropping the brand for good.

Weller Full Proof tonight. It's just a damned fine pour. I wish I could find more of this. They say Texas is awash with Weller but there is a ton of competition for this. People are lining up around the block overnigh for private picks of this and I'm not going to do thst.

Agreed, awful design, but your prescription is spot on.  And the best thing about changing disc pads is after 20 minutes to change the 1st wheel, it only takes 10 minutes to do another one.  I think I could use a three finger pour about now, I'm starting to remember what it took to change my drum brakes!

Two bourbons that I'm trying for the first time.  The Benchmark 8 is a recent purchase.  The OF 1910 I bought last year and am just now getting to it. 

 

The Benchmark is not bad.  It has some BT notes but it's just way too bland at 80 proof.  It isn't even good in a cocktail. 

 

I have to say, I find the 1910 undrinkable.  All I get is a cloying molasses like sweetness followed by intense oak bitterness.  This was heading to be my first drain pour until last night...

 

I mixed two parts Benchmark with one part 1910 and wow!  This was not bad at all!  The Benchmark softens the rough edges of the 1910 and the intense flavors of the 1910 fill out the blandness of the Benchmark.  The blend is a nice, flavorful sipper which is interesting because it's only 3 or 4 proof points higher than the 80 proof Benchmark.  I'll have to pick up a 1920 (which I like a lot) and try a 1915 blend I guess.

It is simply magnificent Indian Summer in NW OH today so Mrs. F and I took our pours to the swing under (in? I never know which)  the pergola. She had Old Tub and I had some JB SB. Both have been featured in recent posts including some comparisons with KC. As is often the case, I tend to judge the relative value of bourbons. In OH, the price of KC is about $40/750--almost exactly what I pay for a handle in AZ. So, given my drothers, I buy my KC in AZ and am happy with the Tub and JB at $15 or more less per 750 than KC. Still, I have a 750 of KC here that I will not open until it is closer to time to leave for AZ. Assuming, of course, that we will be permitted to go to AZ in January.

Nothing like doing your own wrenching. For those that pine for the goo old days of drum brakes and points, I had a 57 Chevy with the vacuum operayed windshield wipers. What idiot thought those were a good idea.
