Sorry for a topic on this but I got pulled to purchase for a lottery for $57 and have to let them know id I want it by end of day...

I never went for it in the past because the reviews seem to be about 50/50.

What say the masses?

A. It's a good un...

B. No big deal

I personally like it a lot, but it just depends on if you like a bold and in your face bourbon like that one.  Your own experiences with high proof pours will have to be the judge.

Well, I definitely have my high proof days and often use KC120 as a goto, so bold ain't no kinda deterrent.

Thanx...

B (for me personally)

That said, if you have never tried then I vote you should go ahead and pick up.  My opinion comes after 2 full bottles and several other pours.  I am in the minority of those who do not love it.  I'll circle back eventually, but the last few times my guy can tell I am not that enthused and will mention that the Stagg Jr. will make someone else very happy. Which always gets me to wave my hands and said give it to them then.

Not surprised to hear this. In the past, several of the more experienced folks with what I considered a parallel to my taste profile, shared something similar. At that time, I switched my loyalties of higher proofs to KC120 & ECBP. I guess the lure of it now being a lottery pick has me intrigued. I'll give it a shot and spill the beans, good or bad.

Thanx Bob

Stagg JR has been mostly AWOL around here for a while. IIRC, the last batch I had was #9. But it was good.?

I would jump on it at $57.  I haven't seen it in a while.

Try vatting it 50:50 with standard BT you may find the sum exceeds the parts. I first heard of that from Steve, tried it and never looked back.

I haven't had this year's batch but both from last year's were incredible.  Fingers crossed we get some in Texas.

Stagg Jr  is one of my favorites and at $57 a no brainer buy.  But it makes me sad that it has become a lottery item.  Not long ago, it was relatively easy to find.

It's a good bourbon. But when stores start placing it in their "lottery" lineup I am not very impressed with that store.

Probably the main reason that I asked here. I have passed it up for years riding shelves, but since the outbreak, have not been in the stores enough to know what's out there still or not at all...

You would hate living in Saint Louis so much.

dSculptor's vatting was StaggJr:ER10:BT and delicious - I'll have to look it up again to get the ratios, but it was my go-to when my first StaggJr (Batch #3 or #4, IIRC) was just too hot to drink neat.  I still have some in a decanter!   Mo betta'.   ?

Ain't this the truth, our allocations of stuff from BT are almost non existent and what little bit places do get they either charge secondary, lottery item, or some other type of rewards based earning to get. I stopped at 4 places Sunday looking for ECBP mainly, but was surprised to see only one place had any standard BT on the shelf. Usually you see it on the shelf in almost every store. It's sad when WSR is even a lottery item at some places here.

When I was struggling to get through my Stagg Jr.  I did the Stagg Jr./ER blend at what I believe was a bit heavier on the ER to get the proof closer to 100.  It was delicious with those ER cherry cola notes and the amped up brown sugar from the Stagg with so much less harshness and heat then the Stagg on its own.  I thought to myself, now, this is a product BT SHOULD be releasing regularly!

Then I went back to the EHSiB I had open and it was the same flavor profile as my blend, but with better balance and flavors. . .   So much for THAT idea

For my own taste these days I'd go for ECBP or even the KC12 (yes even at 100proof) before the Stagg JR. Having said that- the Stagg Jr I have not tasted the more recent releases as I still have a few bottles from '18 & '19.

At one time I took a pour of GTSECBP 140.2, and a Stagg Jr (I forget which one) tested SBS. The ECBP was very close in overall character to the GTS, and this surprised me.  While I thought  the JR languished a distant 3rd. I thought it would be closer. But, different batches ...

If you haven't tried it yet- please do and get back to us with your impressions. Give a contrast and compare to something else you enjoy greatly. Love to hear what the JR is up to these days since I can no longer find it available anywhere

Cheers,

RW
