The title pretty much sums it up.

I have a small torch, that I use for cooking, and I like the occasional smoked Old-Fashioned.

Right now, I use smoked ice, (which is simply cubes made with water that's been smoked for a few hours)

The smoked ice does make for a fantastic Old-Fashioned, but I really don't want a tray full of smoked ice.

That, and I have a small cooking torch, and those smoked cocktails look fun to make.

Any recommendation or tips, would be greatly appreciated!

I use a "Foghat". I think it came from Amazon. It's OK. Occasionally I have a hard time really getting a lot smoke out of it.  You have to use a fairly tall glass (or a small pour) to keep it out of the liquid.

I thought a smoker kit was a cigar and ashtray. 😂

Yep.  You can do that douchey shit where you put the drink in a snifter and below cigar smoke into it.

I got a Foghat cocktail smoker for Valentine's Day.  First time I used it got a fairly good amount of smoke (although learned I need to do this where I'm going to enjoy it, because the minute I moved the glass - poof - smoke was gone).  Second time got almost none.  They only give you 1 oz of chips in the one I got, which based on the instructions is only enough for 3 smokes, so curious if folks have tried anything better.

Making a smoked cocktail doesn't have to be overly complicated for one or two home cocktails at a time.

Simple is good enough for me.

I usually make smoked ice but, it's fun making cocktails and I do like to play with the torch.  I've seen a few where you fire up the wood chips and the shoot down into the glass, thru the the lid of the topper, and there's copious amounts of smoke.

I'll post when I get one and try it.

I like this idea!  I think @GaryT should use the real wood tip from a smoked Black & Mild for his smoked cocktail.  Because, nothing quite beats the sweet bouquet of a Black and Mild wafting through the evening air….Think what it could do for a cocktail!  🤣

I was just thinking I need to light a Black & Mild and just use that rather than the wood chip!!  Although I like the idea of recycling the wood tip after enjoying the B&M :D

Middleton Cherry Blend’s might work well too. Same with Swisher Sweets BLK Cherry. 😉

How long do you smoke the water for your cubes?

3 hours.   You can taste it to see if it's too your liking.

Smoke it on it's own and keep the temp ~ 200 degrees, to avoid losing water to evaporation.

Just make a small fire, with clean briquettes, (greasy post-cook charcoal taints the water with the flavor of whatever protein you've smoked...and it ain't good) dedicated solely for the smoked ice and keep the temp low, at least below the boiling point.    I use fruit woods, like cherry and/or apple.

I use a casserole dish, to get the most exposure to the smoke.

Good luck!

  • 1 month later...

I got a Crafty Cocktail gift card for Christmas and purchased one of their smoke top kits. Smoke top, 3 different kinds of flavored chips, the screens and a torch. Its a novelty but fun to do every once and a while. I've smoked old fashioneds and mahattans...next I want to do a negroni. Another company named Middleton Mixology has a similar kit.
