MSRP of $279 (or $249 - don't exactly remember but it's in this range)

At that price I'm out.

In my neck o' wood, can get extra year for $150 less with EC18.  I might get one just to see what it is, but not spending effort to look for it.

Hope its better than the 27 which is an over oaked , astringent mess.

I loved the 27, but then I've yet to find too much wood.  The 1st woodford maple finish, 2011; stout, strong, over-powering, um, just right.

Not gift shop. Standard allocated release.

I have now had a pour at a bar - It was fairly amazing.   Felt like it was better than most BTAC collection - and would rival a Stagg by my taster.

I try not buy into the hype - but this was really good.   Thank god for a neighborhood bar in Louisville at $35/ounce.

What would you bid?  I was at a new liquor store in my hunting ground the other day which had one of these in a display case that they called "allocation alley".   Their plan is to take bids on the allocated stuff each quarter switching out the new quarterly shipments of allocated stuff and selling the present display bottles to the highest bidder.  You could fill out a card with your ID/contact info and bid amount on a particular bottle and place it in a box.  I'm not sure they'll get allocated stuff quarterly as they plan, but I'll stop by to see what, if anything, they get in next quarter's allotment (September).  My knee jerk reaction was to bid MSRP (and maybe add $20 as a "tip" to the store) on the HH17yo until I found out how much MSRP is.  I left without bidding and have no plans to bid.  I guess the point of all this is that I spotted one in the wild and I wanted to share the store's "allocation alley" bidding model which I had not seen before.

I'm not sure I like this blind model of bidding.  What if at the end multiple people have bid the same amount.

A better way for everyone might be a silent auction with a log bidders can update until the deadline.  Everything out in the open.

Good point.  I didn't ask about the rules such as tie-breakers and they might have had rules posted that I didn't see.  I saw only 2 bottles of interest to me (the HH17yo and a Yamazaki 12yo) out of maybe 8 in the display case and two of those were HH 7yo bib.  Will get more info next hunt.  Anyhow, I read a couple of reviews for the HH17yo.  Very similar to geclbxf's observation above.  Sounds like good stuff but maybe not quite on par with others in same MRSP range (which assumes you can find premiums at MSRP).

Yamazaki 12 puzzling me.  In Virginia, for many years it was standard staple on shelves, somewhat cheap for what it is.  Then a run and it disappeared.  Then it was made allocated and sold fast.  Only few months later, today, I looked at 2 cases on shelf next to 2 cases Hibiki.   ?????

I dabble in Hibiki and Nikka but I'm certainly not knowledgeable on Japanese whisky.  But I know that the regulations have recently changed about what can be marketed as "Japanese whisky" (in regards to the inclusion of Scotch versus Japanese distillate in the product).... I dunno but I just wonder if this change might have had an impact on the availability and supply of product on the shelves like you have recently noticed?  Just a thought...

I remember Yamazaki going scarce after the Fukashima nuclear/tsunami disaster.

Perhaps.  Certainly true for lesser brands.  The definition addition to law was pushed by bigger boys like Nikka and Suntory to make their products more like Scotch where "Japanese Whisky" is a specific designation.  I'd suspect this would increase sales for products like Yamazaki but seeing opposite.  But maybe rolling with your rationale, perhaps USA market in general getting skittish??

I'm not sure.  I was just trying to think what has changed recently and that law seems to coincide with the changes noticed in the shelf supply.  Thats the only thing I could think of. Could be just a coincidence too.

Not to mention the damage done by the "soap opera" in Japan about Masataka Taketsuru that made Japanese whisky much more popular in Japan and also helped seriously limit supply here!

They're just waiting for the nuclear fallout barrels to come of age - word is they age a lot faster so should be released any time now

Skittish?   Sure -  i've stuck to the brands I know,  and haven't touched the flood of new stuff.   As for Yamazaki - the bottle I've got open is the best one I've ever had.   It's not cheap,  but it's stone cold classic.
