Do You Keep A Decanter'd Spirit?

Do you even keep one? If so what is your standard?

Something as a goto, something as a standard, something you can count on, something you can share and know all is ok? Sometimes you don't know what you want, so the decantered spirit becomes an easy grab and consistently good enough!!!

 

So far mine has been KC9, Bulleit10 or OGD BiB...

Just finished an OGD BiB and have no reason to change it.

I have a Fenton Glass Jack Daniels decanter I received as a gift from my mom in the 90s that I have used from time to time.  I haven't used it in a couple of years.  

 

Come to think of it, your post has inspired me to plan on dusting it off and fill it up.  It will probably be WT101 or another bourbon staple that I already have a family size bottle on hand in the bunker.

Exactly, Kep.  I’m now inspired as well!  I have a nice one that I have used every once in a while over the years.  Going to clean it and fill it up with some sort of brandy or Armagnac.  Something about pouring a brandy from a decanter that makes me feel all hoity-toity and Grey Poupon-ish…

Wow, successful clear ice project last week, and filling a decanter this week!  Ya’ll got me on a roll!

I have two Star Wars Stormtrooper decanters, one filled with SB Blend, and the other filled with a 1792 mingle (1792 GBS Full Proof & 1792 Port).  Ironically I have kept some bottles thinking I should decant something into them (like an empty RHF), but haven't done anything with them yet.  Likely would go with a WT101 or Old Fo 100.  Someday.  Maybe.

I use a decanter for blending experiments-- usually small volume. The current resident is a three-way split between Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (a PS bottle), Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel and Basil Hayden’s— seasoned with a dash of George Dickel Barrel Select. Estimated ABV 52%.

In my case, the Woman of the house, doesn't want to see my bottles on the cabinet. Most are kept up high where I can't really see what I'm choosing; however, she doesn't mind the decanter on full display in all of it's glory... (Cuz it's purdy)

I have a really nice crystal decanter and glasses. Over the last 11-12 yrs, whenever I open a FR LE SmB it goes straight into the crystal.  I always feel like it makes a great whiskey fabulous!!

I do love the look of the Stormtrooper decanter, but have to admit - not user friendly to pour from.  But as it is poured from infrequently, it spends most of its time looking cool - so, mission accomplished

only decanters I've used, rarely, were just another repurposed whiskey bottle.  Until now. 

 

I bought personalized decanter and glasses from a vanity producer/engraver, it honors family history "Babington Distilling Northumberland UK"  So I'll definitely break that puppy out just to play in back yard and when guests over for party.

I decant for at least two reasons:  (1) Fat, squat bottles take up too much butler's cart surface area; (B) bought a handle of something and don't want to handle a handle when pouring shots or making cocktails; (III) my several decanters are all square so they nestle together better than round bottles (like, I have vodka (100 proof Smirnoff bought by the handle), Bombay Sapphire gin bought by the handle, Dewer's ditto, and 4R YL ditto on the cart-each with a pewter tag reminding me of what's inside each); (FOUR) these spirits are used much more for cocktails than they are for sipping.  ALSO, I decant corked OGD BIB into an orange screw top OGD BIB (which still has its $18.99because I spill less when pouring from the screw top late at night.

 

I'm sure I could think up a few more.  OH!!OH!! Relative gave me a square decanter and a bottle of his favorite single malt so I'd always have what he drinks close at hand.  It sits on the floor under the cart where he can see it when he comes over.  It's really nice, but I bet it cost four times what my basic set of four glass decanters cost me.

 

I don't count the several flasks of various sizes as decanters - I only use one regularly, and that's my titanium WT 101 KSBW flask which goes fishing with me.

 

EDIT - Thought of another: sometimes aperitifs/liqueurs/etc. only come in 750ml, so I bought some Container Store carafe style bottles with tight rubber stoppers so I can divvy up the liquid into smaller amounts.  ALSO, I do this with vintage port when I (rarely nowadays) open something I laid away 20 years ago.

Uh, PL - I haven't started drinking yet today.  I'm having trouble parsing this sentence (notwithstanding the ruler wielded by Sister Mary Cookie Jar years back).  It seems to say that you decant your finished pours (i.e., what's left in an EMPTY glass) in your barrel.  If IIRC, you have a dregs barrel/bottle/collector into which you put dregs, leftovers, Meh stuff and let it mellow.  Is THAT what you said?

Filled it!   

 

 

Had a handle of EW1783 I had picked up so decided to crack it and put the decanter to use.  First time trying the 90 proof EW and it's pretty dang good!

@smokinjoe, You Sir are my highest Guru and hold my deepest respect!!!  Besides the fact that I've loved everything you post on here over the years, I really love that you clean your decanter with some sort of brandy like Armagnac, etc. On a more joking note, I've got some salmon marinating in some Grey Poupon and dill this evening before it hits the grill. Lots of hoity-toity goin' on here this evening!. In all seriousness, you're much loved among these parts!

I don't have a decanter per se but I have repurposed some of my more attractive bottles for that purpose.  The one with whiskey in it has a WT101/OF 100 blend in it (embarrassing to say right under Nancy's post!).  It's just a crushable summer whiskey.  The bottle on the far left had some of her magic in it (thank you, Nancy).
