What bourbon are you drinking this Summer - 2024

So yikes, I'm tdy this week and went to a hello event at a local pub. They had a number of allocated bourbons, but nothing I don't have at home. So, I ordered a couple of pours of one of my favorites, Knob Creek 9 without even asking the price. $16.50 a freaking pour! It's great as always, but at that price I should have just had a couple of beers.

One of the bottles that I started on 2.5 or so years ago. Still enjoy it a lot. One of the better finished bourbons in my view.

I've never tried that. How does the cognac come through? Any clue on the age?

One more reason to love Heaven Hill. I got a hold of a few 10y in Ohio....man, those are good!

Yes they are!  I also have a 10 yr open and I like that one a lot.  Much more than this 11yr which is from the first year they released these.

A nip from the freezer bottle of EW Black (yes, it's relatively warm lately in Wisconsin, notwithstanding our relative proximity to Canada) led to a healthy pour of Thirteenth Colony.  This bottle is reaching critical stage, and I need to find a replacement soon.  I get an unexpected stone fruit note, perhaps apricot, mid palate.  I know it's bourbon anathema to use the "smooth" descriptor, but it really does apply here.  Maybe there's something to those sweltering Georgia rickhouses.

In my not so humble opinion, I would definitely wait for the C924, or grab an A124 (I think it's great and highly under rated). I simply don't like the B524, it has a burnt rubber taste to me, almost like a bad mezcal, and I say this as an unabashed EC fanboy. B 524 simply doesn't fit my profile.

But opinions differ and that's what sells bad farm land.

Settled, then.  I'll await the C924.

If you blend a 1792 with a 1776, does that give you a 1784?

No.

A really great single barrel Baker’s in the glass over a big clear cube.  Found this barrel a couple months ago, and it’s one of my favorite pours in the rotation.

Prost!!  Phil

We had 2 sets of Grandkids over the past week. My Son & brood from Orlando & my Daughter & crew from Dallas. My house was trashed, loud and shit misplaced the whole week. Luckily the coping mechanism was on the ready & in play. There were some that were camera shy & missed the photo op to include a Bardstown, VOB, Blanton's Gold & I'm sure a couple more.

It was “ladies night” at Wrigley Field tonight. My wife, our niece and our granddaughter went to the game. The Cubs came from two runs down in the bottom of the 9th to beat the St. Louis Cardinals in dramatic fashion. I’m having a nice pour of Blanton’s to celebrate. Maybe more. I might empty this bottle tonight. They just got in the L a little bit ago to head to the station where they parked. Man, I might have to get some more Blanton’s. I finished the bottle I had open by sharing some nice samples. I opened this one and it’s nearing its end. I gifted one bottle to my insurance/financial guy for the great guidance and service he’s provided us. Especially since we retired. Yet another bottle ended up with a friend. Wheeew….

I've seen some rowdy cubs games at Wrigley... it wasn't far from where I grew up. The last time I was there was a crazy cubs-cards game in 2002 that got canceled.

End of week celebratory pour of a locals PS Knob Creek, is also pregame pour before heading off to the park for an evening of baseball.

It's been a damn fine week.

Training camp on Tuesday to check out our new staff and players, (I'll let you guess the team). Golf on Thursday.

Crabs and crawfish today with the kids and grandkids.

The kids, and the mess, are gone and I've settled comfortably on the back porch watching the O's at Cleveland with some WT101 in the glass...

Looks delicious, especially in the requisite Knob Creek rocks glass.  I am having the same from one of my locals that has stellar picks.  KC9 Single Barrel @ 120 proof is awesome!  Enjoy the live game at the ballpark.

There you go!  Hopefully, the Redskins, er Commanders have a good season.  Any team in the NFC East but the Cowboys.

I've enjoyed every KCSB I ever got to try.  My guess is all the barrels offered for that are quite good.

I like the medley a lot, ditto the JMCB. I did not occur to me to single out the cognac flavor, I shall try & do so on the next pour. Pre-google, I'm gonna guess 4 -6 year age. The internet guesses 8-12 years, so I was way off!

I'd have to compare HH brandy finished (probably not a bad stand in for cognac), then the armagnac finished, then the sherry finished, got all 3. Once I can tell them apart I think I'll return to the Magnus bottles and see if I can separate out the tastes. As it stands, the regular JM strikes me as an easy drinker, flavor, complex, and sweet. It is one of my favorite finished bourbons. I think the finish is just right, so many of the finished products seem overdone, with the finish being too strong and hiding something raw underneath. Here it just adds a nice "something".

Come to think of it, I think the Red Spot Irish whiskey has a similar finish, but a much lighter flavor to build on...I know it's apples & oranges, but I wonder if I could pick out the finish flavors on it, or it simply is so blended that my still-developing palate can single out.

I also know that Nancy Fraley's background with Cognac, including certain processes, runs deep and influences the final product. I'll need to re-review her extensive posts; she's thought it through and then nosed it through!

I saw that and passed. $160 was pretty steep for an unknown.

I would definitely try a pour of I ever see it at a bar.

Spectacular bourbon.  Spectacular glass. Spectacular SB.Com member.  That's all I can say on this one.

A couple of pours of Costco 1792 BIB.  This is an awesome bourbon for $24.  It compares very favorably with 1792 BIB for $40, if you can find it.  I will grab a bottle each and every time that I find one.

@fishnbowljoe I am watching a Hallmark movie.  I am pretending to not be paying attention but the lead actress is hot and one of my favorites.  What can I say?  Cheap Bastard is a Hallmark fan.

Dag!!

The bourbon is spectacular.

I'm following it up with a pour of the regular RR SiB.

It's also spectacular 😉
