What bourbon are you drinking this Summer - 2024

Had a nice to trip to Argentina for a 3-day dove hunt in the boonies. It is generally a whiskey desert. I brought an OWA & JD SBBP to share with hunters and staff. The two guys who were into American whiskey went straight at them. The others enjoyed them, especially the JD. The bartender and concierge had never tried anything like either, they liked them...after adding water!

For those into shotguns or hunting, the Argentine doves are the most excellent & challenging targets. And the food down there (especially meat & dessert) is spectacular. The Argentines are glad to see the doves dead - they are essentially locusts as far as they are concerned. They are not at all good for farmers. And reproduce at crazy rates.

I'm having some Rebecca Creek 16 year tonight.  Good 16yo MGP bourbon.

The ADHD bourbon reviewer youtube guy went nuts over Rebecca Creek 12y CS when he tried it blind. Any thoughts on that or other of their bottles, being a Texas person with some presumed access?

I love dove hunting.

Newsflash! All doves are tough to hit...they fly like bats!

I'll have to google where else to hunt them. I love Argentina, but good grief, it's a hike to get there and then to the boonies.

I very much enjoyed that the little buggers made it challenging and random. And, as usual, I did best on the "surprise" birds. No time to overthink things, just shoot. The Force is with me....if I would just let it come out a bit more. Some of the rifle guys on the trip had the same experience, only more so....less analysis, more feel. Fun stuff.

A neighbor has a good sized piece of property in a neighboring county that we have hunted with our sons.  Always a great time.

I enjoy walking the farm as much as the shooting.  The birds are tasty on the grill as long as all/most of the pellets are found.

I was invited to one a few years back  with some guys I worked with.  When we got there it looked pretty commercial.  It turned out to be a “Hogan’s Alley” with random traps that released farm raise doves for shooters to obliterate.  It did not seen “sporting” to me so I spent a few hours sipping coffee in the clubhouse.  To each their own.

We did a BIB day. I'll choose the HH, but both are $49.99 in these parts and I'm not certain either one is worth 50 bucks. 20240914_181007.thumb.jpg.eaa240e185410a037aec1211a10247dc.jpg

One of my favorite high rye bourbons (OK functionally high rye bourbon, perhaps not officially so - a bourye?). They got it right. No funk, for better (my view) or worse (gobble gobble).

Felt like I needed a punch in the face. So went for the Bookers. Nothing says "punch in the face" like Bookers accompanied by yet another Jim Beam cork failure.

First World Problem. But still...come on guys. We pay for the booze, you are raking it in, how about the accountants not be in charge of cork selection?

Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream in the glass tonight. It’s in my Yellowstone glass from BT, and it has a MM ice ball in it. 🤠 Odd note on the BT Bourbon Cream. I bought a half a dozen bottles at Sam’s Club a while ago. It was on clearance. I can’t remember the price. I shared bottles with guys in our bourbon/beer/cigar group. Shelf was cleared, then a few weeks later it was back on the shelf at regular price. We stopped at Sam’s Club Sunday, and it was on clearance again. 🫨

Had a good little pour of KC9 single barrel which was incredible in the moment and then chased it with a small pour of Jack bonded which was quite nice.

Y'all reminded me that I had quite a cache of open bottles still in storage since the move. So I dug those out and now my bar is quite full and I am spoiled for choices.

Love you folks!

I have yet to see HH7 bonded for less than $70.

And my brain is pickled by olden days.

I used to get EC12 for around 26-30$ and then ECBP for ~60$ and HH 6 for like 20ish.

So HH7 bib at $70 is a hard swallow.

Maybe one day if I get to try it first.

The HH 7 BIB  is on sale at Binny’s for $36.99. It’s normally $49.99 there.  The last bottles of HH 6 BIB I purchased years ago were $13.99. I still have one left.

The bottle's getting low but man this is good.  I'm nursing my stash from when Booker's was $50 - $60.  At current $100+ pricing, it's no longer a buy for me.

that is one of my bucket list hunts I would love to go on someday. I wish they would ship some of those doves up to my farm. The birds had all left the county by the time the 9/1 season opener rolled around.  They can be a challenge to hit at times. Shooting is just like anything else, we have our good days and bad days.

I agree, that doesn't sound "sporting" at all. Good for you...sticking to your guns, as it were.

They sometimes blacken the sky in Argentina. I preferred Tucuman to Cordoba - more birds, and more variability in the wind, etc. It would be nice to not have to travel two days (one to Buenos Aires, and another to the country). A vet in the group said it was easier and faster to get to Kabul or Baghdad. On the other hand...the Argentines know how to cook, especially over wood.

I wonder when the Lux Row 12 stops being HH sourced? I really, really like it. Probably not worth the premium over the ECBP's one gets on the "Bottle Your Own" (not the exact name, but you know what I mean) tour at HH. But still, yum.

Doing an HMK after a new opening. Got it awhile back for my highest payout yet. I believe it was $55. I have to say that I have not had a bad bottle, but can count on 1 hand the bottles I've found. In today's market, it is worth the $55. Don't know what I'd have to pay if on the shelf today, though...

I have a couple customers that have been on those hunts and jealousy is abound from me.

I was gifted one of these from my Dallas SIL. Liking absolutely ZERO TX bourbons, my skepticism was front and center.

1st taste, wow, that's quite good.

After, came the damn, that's quite nice; every pour.

I never lost the skepticism until the last pour.

And then, sh!+, that was a good bottle...

Exactly what popped into my head when I read Anwalt's post. Every hunter that said I killed 23-25 out of a box of shells,(25) I have boldly called a liar...

KC has always been my goto for such nights. But, 4R SB should do...

Well, bugger me silly. Decided to have a little extra today, an ECBP private 9y 135 proof one of you (thank you, you know who you are) helped me get. I like it more than the LR12. Intense, strong simple, wonderful. ECBP does strike me as one of those bottles that can and usually does shine at the higher proofs...unlike, say, OF SiB BP, which is very good but does well with some ice after 126 proof or so. And this ECBP at 1/2 the price of the LR12. I've said it before, God bless the good people at Heaven Hill.
