Kinda relative….🤔

I was looking through some old pics trying to find something. This wasn’t the pic I was looking for, but I had to smile. 😁  🦃  😎

I still haven't purchased a bottle of this yet. Maybe next week. 😉

I have a question for you WT lovers: Is it just me, or has the 101 been ...... not very good lately? I'm noticing Rare Breed is not so good either. Is it just my pallate, or is there something different?

I have seen various YouTube bourbon reviews that speak to the same concern.  I personally have a bunker of both and have not purchased either in quite a while.

Thank you. I have a couple of older WT 101's stashed that I have not opened. I have one RB that I have not opened

(103.8 proof) that is probably ....... 9 years old? I'm not impressed with the recent offerings of either. I was hoping maybe my pallate has been off, but I'm not so sure now.

I got a bottle over the holidays.  Definitely overpaid.  It is a step above the standard WT101.  I have had a few pours over the past few weeks.  I prefer WTRB.  If it comes in at $40-45 over time, it is a solid buy.  Anything over that is FOMO.

I have an open bottle of OE7 that is a better bourbon and a better value, even at MSRP.

I don't know.  I loaded up on previous batches of WT101 (2018ish if I'm not wrong) so I haven't tried any new ones.  The WT101 and RB from 2018-19 was rumored to have some older aged whiskey in it, so I wouldn't be surprised if the newer product isn't quite as good as those years.

I don't believe there have been any Rare Breed batches with that low of a proof (103.8).   Might want to double check that label...

Yep, I read it wrong. It's 112.8.

If I were to rate the lower to mid-shelf WT offerings on where I believe the fit in the WT universe and price points, it would be

RRSiB

WTKS

WTRB

WT101 70th

RR 10

WT 101

WT 86

This doesn't my personal preferences.  It is just where I see each product fitting into the WT universe.  I didn't include prices because they can vary so much depending on location but if I did I would place WTRB and WT101 7th from $45-50.  The other prices could be applied as appropriate.

I also wonder if planning for a regular domestic 8/101 (a new label was cleared leading to speculation on this) has caused barrels to be diverted  and hurt the quality of regular 101. While age isn’t everything, age statements can help consistency and decrease some of these ups and downs. Although it doesn’t eliminate them as we see with RR 10.

I haven't had any WT101 lately (aside from the 70th anniv. bottle, which doesn't count for what you're asking about).  But my wife did gift me a Rare Breed at Christmas.  It's as good as I always remember it being.

I did catch a Bourbon Junkies video the other day where they did a Distilllery Duel between Wild Turkey and Heaven Hill.  I believe that video is a couple months old.  They blinded WT101 next to ECSmB and both guys scored the WT101 insanely low, like 2/10 low.  To the point that they seriously questioned "What is wrong with this bottle?" once it was revealed what it was.  I'd forgotten about that video till I saw your post, but maybe there's something to it.

Kurt form SLB Drinks is not happy with it either. I'm hoping it was just an off run and it gets back to what I know.

Picked up another today.  Salesman said they got 3 cases in.  Limit 1 per person.

I am a WT fan and many of their offerings are among my favorites, especially WT01, WTR101, WTRB, RRSiB, RRSiB Rye.  However, while I believe it is a step above the standard 101 but I didn't find it to be anything special given the MSRP ($50).  It is certainly worth a try but unless it is around $40, However, if I see it on the shelf, I am more likely to pick up two standard 101 bottles or a WTRB for the same price.

Thought I'd missed out on being able to find it again because I haven't seen it anywhere for a couple months now.  Stopped into a store that's off the beaten path and they had 3 on the shelf so I grabbed two for the bunker.  👍

I just was at my local LS and had a conversation with the owner about the WT 70th.  He said that rumor has it that this was produced by Buffalo Trace for Wild Turkey using a Wild Turkey mashbill.

I have a hard time believing this but stranger things have happened in the bourbon genre.  I can’t imagine Jimmy saying it was OK to subcontract this to another distillery.  Particularly because it is a commemorative bottle.

Any thoughts from the flock or those in the know?

Cheers

There is a recent release that fits this description but the 70th is not it.

Straight from the horses mouth about the WT 70th being distilled at BT. “No truth.

Your liquor store owner was confused.  There are a lot of 15 year old NDP bottles recently released that people are calling "Buff Turkey" ... years ago when Wild Turkey contracted BT to distill some of their WT mash bill for them and the barrels were aged at WT before they decided not to release them under their brand and sold off the barrels.  None of that liquid has been bottled under the WT label. Bruce Russell has confirmed this in recent interviews.

Thanks for the clarification fellas.  I thought this sounded a bit far fetched!

Once again, straight from the horse’s mouth. I asked if there was any truth to this. Answer:”Nope. 🤷🏻
