I picked up an ECBP B524 tonight.  As always, it was an experience.  

 

I went to Kroger tonight because as a Cheap Bastard, I appreciate the 4X fuel points when shopping on Friday.    I used last week's $1.00 off per gallon this morning before shopping tonight.  Anyway, I digress.

 

My youngest son asked me to pick up some gin.  He likes Aviator cocktails.  Well, gee sure I will since it gives me an excuse to pick up a bottle or two for me.  I picked up the ECBP and a WTR101.  The ECBP was around $78 but I was willing to forego the 15% 6-bottle discount.  Probably FOMO and my wife told me to wait for a 25% off sale before adding bottles just to bring the price of one bottle down.  It warms my heart to know she has learned so much from me over the years.  

 

Anyway, the young lady at the cash register somehow got distracted and only rang up the WTR101.  So, when my bill rang up about $100 less than expected, it caught my attention.  Per Kroger usual, the line was crowded since only two staffed registers were open so I headed over to the service desk which per usual was closed.  So, I went to one of the two groups of shelf checkout registers to correct their oversight.  

 

The young ladies were surprised and said most people would have just left without checking their receipt.  But, the shortfall was so obvious that I couldn't miss it.  I told them I am not wired that way.  Long story about to turn short.  They rang up the ECBP and the price was $67 without a discount but was close to the discount price.

 

As my wife said, you wouldn't enjoy it if you knew you had not paid for it.  She is right.  

 

I am always ok with an unexpected savings but I am never ok with not paying for something as the result of an oversight.

I'm a huge fan of the Dickel 15yr SiBs.  For $55, the complexity and depth of flavor is amazing.  One of the last great bargains in extra aged bourbon, IMO.

LOL, I timed my WT 70th purchase in order to take advantage of this same perk. Only later did I learn that they don't give fuel points for alcohol purchases at Mariano's.

Just found Wild Turkey Jimmy Russell’s 70th Anniversary 8-Year-Old at a local Total Wine in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  As Wild Turkey is my favorite bourbon, I was very excited to find a few bottles.  I don't know if they were on the shelf yet--but were online, and after stopping at my favorite local store and they hadn't received any yet, I decided to check online.  It's at several locations in the metro, based on the online search--for around MSRP--I think I paid $51.99.

 

Needless to say, this will be the first thing I do after work today.  And I look forward to a side-by-side with regular WT 101.  The color in the glass is certainly darker, and the flavors leap out of the glass compared to the regular WT 101.  Not sure if it'll rise to the heights of a good RRSib or the more limited editions like RR 13, and RR 1998, that come to mind.  But I am hoping this will be widely available and everyone that wants one, can easily get one.  I stopped the limited edition bourbon hunting/raffles a few years ago, so this was a fun purchase today.

I got a call this morning that my name was picked for a drawing.  I’d been in the store a few times without purchasing. 

one of the times, to owner/manager said I should sign out for their Westward lottery.  They were getting it in a new line and were giving away a Milestone 2. They had samples, it is very good.  A very unusual single malt.  Very vanilla, cinnamon and raisin all around.  The presentation is amazing!
Anyway, I felt guilty on winning, having not bought anything in over 2 months.  So yeah, I’m weak.

That's because the WT101 is a 1 Liter bottle (it's a little better priced than the 750 ml or the 1.75 liter at my local liquor store).  The 70th anniversary is a 750 ml.

 

Initial taste impression is that the 70th may be a little richer and spicier in the nose, as well as the palate in comparison to the regular WT101.  The 70th reminded me of some older (not dusty) bottles from around 2015 or so.  There is a color difference in the glass, with the 70th being darker.  With that said I tried both side-by-side and also with a RRSib, and I think the RRSib was clearly superior.  With that said, the 70th anniversary was the first neck pour.  Overall, I am pleased to have found it, and I'll enjoy it--but I do think most RRSibs will be more complex and pleasing.

I haven't opened a WTKS for a while, but the last one was rich caramel, baking spices, sweet candied orange, full bodied, and deceptively smooth to drink.  It went down quickly.  Hardly any burn/ethanol on the nose or palate.  The 70th seems to have more spice than the last WTKS I had, and I think I'll have a pour tonight.

 

That would be a good side-by-side!  Unfortunately I think I only have one WTKS left in the bunker, and it's an older bottle that I've been holding off on.

I'm glad to hear the WT 101 was a liter.  That's actually my favorite size bottle when available.  For a moment, I worried the 70th Anniversary was a 700ml.

Thanks Mike. One member of our bourbon/beer/cigar group is more than generous. He loves good bourbon and likes to share.  He’s a really,really great guy.
