WTKS for the evening.  Brushed down the felt on the pool table today.
I also spent about an hour looking for some ashtrays for Saturday’s gathering.  I ended up digging through some boxes from years ago that had been tucked away in the basement.  I did find about 25 pipes and some tobacco humidors that I had forgotten about.  My wife will be thrilled when she gets home.

I’m not going to say that my recent EWSB’s are as good as I remember from back in the good old days (the 1994 still remains one of the best bourbons I’ve ever had), but these recent bottles at >8 years (2016 here, now) are light years ahead of the lean years that prompted many of us to desert the brand some time ago.  In my eye, I’m happy to say that HH has re-established this as a premium bourbon in its lineup.  As it deserves to be.

What year was it that someone here said it tasted like “wet paper bag”?  The 2009 maybe?

Really good to see props given to 2016 barreling. I've tucked away a couple of the 2015's and was one of my top goto's of last year. Happy for the continuance.

Redd, I’m sure my rediscovery revelation started last year with the 2015, too.  Didn’t bunker any, but so happy to have it back to form!   And, it’s showing up somewhat regularly!  👍🏻

The first 4R PS I bought finally poured its final drop tonight. While this isn't close to my favorite recipe, I do have an appreciation for this bottle.

I had a pour of my home blend Larceny (BP + 92 proof store pick) to warm up.

Now I'm having Remus Repeal batch 2.  It's a really good one.

I'm confused, (no surprise 😉), but do you mean the barreling or bottling dates?

I bought one, years ago, just to use my custom label.

I wanted something a little different, so opened a G. Dickel 90 proof (used to be #12).

There is a certain type of corn aroma I get - reminds me of being inside the mill at Spring Mill State Park when they're grinding the corn meal.  🌽

The other day, my wife showed me a bottle of Sweetens Cove signed by Manning in a charity auction.  It got me to thinking.  Hey, there's some GD in my bunker.

As I often do when sipping from various MGP bottles, I also couldn't help but sample from my other open 100ish proof bottles of MGP bourbon, to compare to the Remus Repeal II.

In this case it's an open bottle of Rebecca Creek 16 yr at 93 proof, and a bottle of Belle Meade Reserve (108.3 proof).

I usually love this bottle of Rebecca Creek 16yr... but tonight this whiskey is having a bit too much oak bitterness in comparison.

The Remus Repeal 2 is great, .... BUT I am really digging the Belle Meade Reserve the most tonight.  I think it's the younger whiskey that is suiting my palate on this particular night.

Tonight's casual SBS ranking:

1.  Belle Meade Reserve

2.  Remus Repeal II

3.  Rebecca Creek 16yr 93.4

That's the thing about whiskey:  sometimes it's more about our palates than the whiskey.

YMMV 🤷‍♂️

Glad you said GW4G.  I mixed a fresh batch in an old weller 12 liter bottle.  Let it marriage up for a few weeks.

What do you think is sufficient “decanter” time?

OMG, the 12 liter bottle must be as big as a five gallon bucket? Well done!

I find it to be pretty good out of the gate, but 2 weeks seems to help...

Early Afternoon WSR...

Okay, so I divided GW4G.

Started with a couple of WSR's.

Finishing with an OGD 114.

Not disappointed in either. Gumbo in the ready. Nice Saturday...

Yeah, it’s a bit confusing.  The 2016 bottle in my pic, was barreled in 2016, and bottled in 2024.  The 1994 I referred to was barreled in 1994, and bottled in 2004.
While immersing myself into this brand here now, it hit me that since the first bottle of EWSB was “1986”, the “2016” represents the 40th year of distillate for the brand. ..I think…🤪

It's been 33 years.

I don't think I can sleep.

I'm hoping that this will  help...

Booker's B96 batch and Larceny BP A121.  Definitely prefer the Booker's tonight.
