Having a short pour of 1792 SiB. I think this can qualify as a dessert pour.  Perfect night cap.

Cheers

Having a pour of some Hancock’s while watching the Wash v Phili game.  Those glasses will wait for tomorrow.

I've been revisiting some of my 2024 Advent Calendar samples, since I don't always finish the whole sample on the actual day.  Frank August Mizunara Finish; Four Roses SiB store pick; Baker's 2022-03 Kentucky Tea; Russell's Reserve Sib store pick; Journeyman Corsets, Whips, & Whiskey; Barrell Edition 001 Mizunara Finish; Knob Creek LE 2001 15-yr; Booker's 2020-03 Pigskin Batch.

Also went to a Lunar New Year party hosted by some Taiwanese friends.  He's a Kavalan fanboy so I had some Kavalan Solist Single Malt finished in Oloroso casks.  Had a lot of bourbon-y notes like vanilla and caramel, plus deep fruit.  Pretty tasty.

I’m not going to say that my recent EWSB’s are as good as I remember from back in the good old days (the 1994 still remains one of the best bourbons I’ve ever had), but these recent bottles at >8 years (2016 here, now) are light years ahead of the lean years that prompted many of us to desert the brand some time ago.  In my eye, I’m happy to say that HH has re-established this as a premium bourbon in its lineup.  As it deserves to be.

Hmmmmm, now I need to revisit. Just like old times you are influencing me to buy more bourbon lol.

My palate might be a little off tonight, since I started with some Booker's Kentucky Tea batch and it just wasn't hitting.  Switched to Remus Repeal VII.  Never the best Remus Repeal but I was enjoying it less tonight than usual.  In fact, just took a sip of WT 101 70th Anniversary and liked it way more.  I'll probably stop for the night.

How did you like the Mizunara finished whiskey?     I tried my first one, a few weeks ago, and I really like it.

I didn't like the Frank August as much as the Barrell.  My notes from December for the Frank August were "Nose has some classic bourbon notes but some earthy tones and wood.  A little like Frey Ranch.  Lemon Pledge.  Not too much proof.  Palate is proofier, has a depth to it--age?  Could it be a single malt?  6-7/10."  My impression was about the same this time around.

In December my notes for the Barrell were "Nice nose--sweet, leathery, dark fruit, reminds me of some ECBP.  115 proof?  Palate is creamy, decently long finish.  8/10."  When I tasted it a few days ago I thought it drank a little proofier but still 8/10.

My guess is that some people might really like or really hate the Mizunara finish (I know some people are like that with Amburana) but that overall, it's only a small part of the overall palette of nose and flavor notes.  IOW, I suspect I would like the Barrell much more than the Frank August even if neither were Mizunara finished.

Interestingly (to me anyway, lol), 5 of the 24 samples this year were finished whiskies.  Three of us contribute samples to the collection so it wasn't just one person.  I have certainly noted the boom in finished bourbons over the last several years.  Cheers!

Freddy and I decided to spend a day at the beach,  and the mainland packy that so ably serves this dry town had some New Riff 8 year,  100 proof!

Gotta try!

It more than holds its own next to the 1792 BIB,  which is a fine, fine pour; indeed, it's nearly old school perfection.   But I give the New Riff the edge mainly due to the mouthfeel,  which I attribute to the New Riff being a batched product.   The 1792 happens to be a single barrel,  and suffers from a bit of dryness next to the sumptuous palate of the NR.

This is definitely an old school evening of the finest sort,  with a warm bourbon buzz,  Fred devouring a bully stick, King Crimson on the box and lots to read about the Eagles.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm not a big fan of finished whiskey,  but some of them have really grown on me.

That's kinda been my experience too.  Doing a finish is adding one more variable to the flavor equation that can be hit or miss.  I've liked finished whiskeys more lately than before but I don't know if that is my palate's evolution of if distillers/blenders are getting better at it.  It definitely takes a light touch.

Agreed.

It could be a little of both.  Our palates do, or should,  evolve and the producers may have finally figured that some finishing can really overwhelm the base spirit. I don't want to drink flavored whiskey 😉

I was gifted a bottle Lagavulin 11 year that was finished Guinness casks,  and it's stellar.

Went back to the Remus VII tonight and it was better.  For laughs, I took down a 104-proof George Remus SBW store pick for comparison.  Sooooo similar.  The store pick doesn't have an age and the Remus VII averages out close to 10 years; I THINK the VII tasted a little richer but I am not sure I could distinguish them in a blind, at least the way my palate is tonight.

I have been drinking the Four Roses SiB recipes. Really enjoying the OESO and OESK.

Also I have had luck buying and sipping  a few bottles of Stagg (Jr) 24C and 24D. Been able to buy them around $100-120, so worth it compared to the past few years.

The Stagg is always a treat for me, as is EC BP, which has become pretty easy to find at $70-80.

Lastly, I have been sipping 1792 BIB. Nice, pretty smooth.

Nothing, dammit!

I had some oral surgery on both sides of my mouth, and I can't drink alcohol right now.

I'm hoping that my beloved Washington Redskins/Commanders/whatevers pull off another upset on Saturday and I just might have a teensy drop to celebrate 😎

Wait, What??!! You had oral surgery and no booze? That's exactly when you need booze!!!

Amen!   Ordinarily, I'd agree but the  procedures included a bone graft....in addition to the mouth  pain, I had an insane headache for a couple of days........alcohol and headaches are not remotely compatible...but......the worst is over and I've had a couple of pours since that post 😉

I’m going through the same thing right now with a head cold. Haven’t had a pour in a few days. Water, orange juice, medicine; rinse, wash, repeat. I have an invite to go out tonight with friends. Maybe…….

Amen to that!

My Mom had a saying, numb a headache, ( and any other pain), drown a fever..

Or maybe it was the other way around. Funny, I can't seem to remember!

Oh well, Cheers!!!

Continuing my re-vamping of the ready-to-drink shelf by placing some of the more 'dynamic' bottles pulled out for Holiday pours back in the bunker in favor 'more ordinary' daily pours.

Today I revisited my open bottle (now: low-fill bottle) of OGD BiB.   Orange Screw Cap! Because that matters! ...Or maybe it really doesn't... I've finished a few "new" bottles since they did away with that style closure, and I can't say it's any different.   But that's a good . . . No! A great thing!   I am once again reminded what a stellar pour this middle-of-the-road whiskey is.   Great baking spices on the palate and better-than-average finish.    I'll finish this one off next time I pour from it; but, for now, it's there to remind me not to overlook a perennial favorite.
