Bought my first OF Statesman, what should I expect? Love OF products.

I think it's a nice addition to their lineup. It fits well along side 1897, 1910, and 1920.

Pulled this out of the bunker and really enjoyed it last night.

Don’t hear many comments or feedback on this MGP juice.  I LIKE it!

That’s because those who know are trying to not draw too much negative attention to it.  😀

Enjoy!

Sitting here sipping some Bakers SmB while texting some friends and neighbors about playing some pool this weekend.  The wife is off to Az. to spend some time with her sisters and family out there.  My youngest son is going to meet her in a few days to hike and climb in the Grand Canyon.  I’m have some foot/leg issues so my days of hiking/climbing are behind me.  Old age sucks!!!

I’m thinking of a 1-2 craft bottle entry fee (not to exceed $100/bottle) to be a 1 bottle per game bet between players.  I’ll provide wings, beers or beverage of choice for the evening.   We may need some cigars (outside only) since there will be no ladies in attendance to roll their eyes.   I will leave that to one neighbor who has the knowledge base in that field.  I have not purchased a cigar in 25 years.  If I can’t hike or climb, I might  as well smoke.
5 of 10 invited are yes so far.  I’m shooting for an 8-10 payers to fit the tournament schedule.

On to some Stagg Jr. b.17.  I’ve gotten 3 more responses to a billiard night, so we are 8 of 10 in.  Cigars are covered.  This is shaping up pretty well.

I am now 10 +2/10.  The neighbor behind me bringing his BiLS with him (along with two bottles of 1970s OGD for the bar).  One lives in the back of the neighborhood and the other wants to buy my house , if we sell.  They are married to sisters and all of the sisters want to live close to each other.  The more the merrier.  We are now 14 for the tournament and the BiLs have the wings covered.  It is shaping up to be a good evening.

I was debating on what to have tonight. I shuffled some sample bottles around, and Bingo!  I spotted a sample bottle of a ps Larceny 8 yr 115.1 proof that my nephew gave me at Thanksgiving. Pretty good. 😋

just a pour of RR 10yr last night. I drank a fair amount of bourbon while I was off work for the last 2 weeks of the year, so I am taking it slow to start the new year.

I'm finally taking the time to sit with a pour of that private pick of EC I posted about grabbing (around last Thanksgiving I think).    I had a small pour among several other drams with my Son and Son-in-Law, I think Christmas Eve.    I didn't make any real effort to understand the bottle at that time.    Everyone liked it; I recall that.    Anyway, now that I'm taking the time and slowly enjoying it, I like it a great deal.   It's not nearly as 'woody' as the old EC-12-yr and/or Barrel Proof offerings have all been.   Some have been 'oak-richer' than others, of course.    This "Toasted Barrel" offering isn't rich like the best of those; but, it's crisper, cleaner, maybe more sharply defined, with an obvious cinnamon note to go with a slightly less obvious clove note that most of EC's (regular as well as the BP's) haven't really had.   This private barrel is age-stated as 10-yeard old, and it's non-chill filtered, which I almost always prefer.    The finish on this one is 'sneaky good'   After only a taste or two, I didn't think the finish was great; but, it seems to really build after a few sips and now it just never seems to go away!   At 127+ proof it's not one to drink very much of neat; hut, that's what I'm doing with this pour.    I'll try (at another time) to seek a 'happy dilution' and see what it offers that way.    More later . . . .

MMCA '23 today. I want to see if my prior words on it were too harsh.

Recently a friend (re)gifted me a bottle of Angel's Envy, which I've been evaluating.  It's a pretty pleasant whiskey.  Somehow I've never had a bottle of it before.  I was concerned about the port finish, but actually it's not nearly as obtrusive as I'd feared.  I can taste the port influence, but it's pretty subtle.  In my bottle, at least---I've seen posts here where people complained about the port being too assertive.  But this bottle I got (the regular old AE expression) perfectly hits the sweet spot when it comes to the port finishing influence.

Perhaps someone here can enlighten me, because I haven't been paying attention:  is AE now their own distillate?  I was looking at threads about AE but most of the discussion was from 10 or more years ago when the bourbon was sourced.  I know they have their own  distillery, but I don't know when (if?) the juice in the bottle transitioned to their own make?

To properly evaluate it, I had to side-by-side  the AE with a few other bourbons, which included OGD BIB (my favorite go-to "regular" bourbon), Ancient Age, regular Maker's Mark, and 1792 Rigdemont Reserve.  The OGD definitely has the most distinctive thing going on, so it's hard to directly compare.  But the AE definitely held its own among the others.  The port finish gives it a distinctive character.  Of course, AE would cost a lot more than any of those other bourbons, so I guess it ought to have something special compared to them.

I think this is my first pour at the house in 25. Wanted something nice so I cracked a batch 3. It was that or batch 5. Went with the one with 20 year barrels in it. It’s oakalicious!

Had the incredible pleasure of spending time over at Anwalt for several days this December month, in Puerto Rico.  Of course, one condition was, more or less forced upon us by Mrs. Anwalt, to reduce his whiskey stash, by drinking it. Now, since he has a collection that encompasses many bottles that I would not even dream about having (Europe is so limited in the offering for American whiskey) we got to try some amazing stuff together. Old Fitz BiB, Lux Row Double Barrel 12 year old, Lucky 7 the Proprietor, Little Book the Infinite,  and yes, even GTS, and that was just one evening! All very good, some great. The phenomenal GTS would return in another line up, in Anwalt's absence, together with a good friend and drinking buddy he has that lives close by. In that one, we had several very good ones, but early on, in that line up, we blinded WLW and GTS. Both amazing, but that night, the GTS won for me albeit by a hair's breadth.

Incredible to have had the opportunity to visit, and to get that kind of access to his collection. Thanks, Anwalt! Will return at some point!

For just my own taste buddies, I LOVE the Lux Row Double Barrel offerings!   I've owned two of 'em and tasted three, or maybe 4-others.   LOVED 'em all.

They certainly ain't cheap!   But, in modern Bourbonia they are probably not that much over-priced.   I'd also say this: If they have any out on offer whenever I'm in their gift shop again, I'll buy another.
