What Beer Are You Drinking In 2025

It’s a new year, and I went into my monger to pick up a couple bourbon replacements, when Lo and Behold!, he had one of my favorite beers on the shelf!  Deschutes Black Butte Porter is certainly my favorite porter, and difficult to find with consistency in these here parts.  I typically go to porters and darker more hearty beers in the Winter months, and BBP is always a treat.  So, starting this new thread off with it!

Yeah, but it’s tough to find consistently.  Luckily, Founder’s is plentiful and very good, though not in Deschutes territory…It’s nice now after a long week, though.

Is Deschutes hard to find some places?  We have it.   Sometimes I buy the Jubeale for Christmas

The farther east you go the harder it is to find or it's nonexistant. Used to be only west coast. They have been slow to expand their reach.

Whenever I see @smokinjoe bring up BBP in the deep recesses of my brain thoughts of Mirror Pond, Red Hook ESB, Mac and Jack’s African Amber, and Alaskan Amber leak out.

These handful of beers are what we drank in the PNW in the late 90s/early 00s.

Then the IPAs came for us.

I had a good one yesterday - Point Amber Lager.  It's along the lines of an Oktoberfest or mild Bock beer.  Malt and hops flavors perfectly in balance, very easy going for a darker beer.

I still like Mirror Pond.

I drank a LOT of Red Hook back in the day. When we bought our house here I was delighted that the actual Red Hook brewery was only 8 miles away. Had a lot of meals in the brew pub on site before my tastes shifted to all the IPAs that were plentiful in so many small breweries around here.

Circling back on this because it was late when I responded last night and I wanted to make sure I remembered this correctly.

As I recall from back when I used to go to Bend and visit the brewery, the reason they have been slow to expand is due to water quality.

In order to get into distribution markets in the middle of the country and further out they want to set up brewing facilities in or closer to those markets.

To stay true to the flavors in the beer they look for water supplies that either have the same mineral makeup as the water in Bend or water that is close enough that they can modify.

I guess that's a bit of a process which is why distribution is not yet nationwide.

A few times I would ride my bike up the Burke Gilman trail to Red Hook and Chateau St Michele. Fun times. I also fondly remember the Herb Farm. I bet that area is way different.

So many great breweries. I always enjoyed places in Seattle that knew what was out there and brought in the best. The Fiddler Inn comes to mind.

I read a few weeks ago that 2024 was the first year in decades where more breweries closed than opened. With that I do want to mention Boundary Bay in Bellingham. After 30 years they’re closing later this year. It’s curious to me that they chose to close instead of selling. I will get a final pint there.

Yes, I recall from home brewing and my research, minerals or lack of in the water have a noticeable effect with hop bitterness in the finished product.

That sucks. I'm pretty sure that Heavy Seas is available in Texas...maybe just not everywhere in TX.

The Winter Storm is seasonal, and probably not widely distributed...

Their website has a "Beer finder"  Just punch in your zip code to check availability

I looked on the TW site and my local has some Heavy Seas brands, but not the Winter Storm.  It seems that brewery gets very high ratings.  Now I'm thinking, might need to try.  🤔

It’s such a beautiful day here, I decided to step back from the porters, and go bright and hoppy.
