Enjoying the heck out of the last two ounces of a New Riff straight rye.  Just a fabulous, mellow nose and very inviting all-around sip.  If you will indulge a truly awful metaphor, it drinks like a comfortable pair of slippers.  Okay, that's a simile.  Regardless, this is will be a repeat purchase.

Haha. Great post.  I haven't tried their regular ryes, but I love their 6 yr malted rye. I may have to give this one a try as well, based on your feedback 👍

EDIT:  I did purchase a bottle of the NR 8 year rye but I haven't opened it yet.  I need to rectify that soon.

I randomly came across a strip mall ls in the middle of nowhere. Of course I stopped. I finally found a triumph, and at msrp to boot. It's was still pretty pricey. But I couldn't pass.

Good for you!  Never hurts to stop, right?  Your picture reminds me just how gorgeous the packaging of the  Master’s Keep line has been.  While the whiskies inside have never failed to being nothing short of fabulous to me, the box and THE BOTTLE particularly, are best in class.

HWRR tonight. You sure can tell the age. This one is a 2015. I wish, I’d been able to find an older bottle. But I sure was happy to find this one last winter.

Happy FRyeDay

I stopped by a regular spot in my travels near my bank. Normally they just have bottom shelfers at very reasonable prices. But today they had a HH GTG rye. It was a no brainer. Spotted, purchased, and opened.

How'd ya' like it, Mattk?   I've never seen one 'in the wild' thus far.

They are very good. There is a really sweet note on the front of the sip, almost like honey. It is viscous and drinks well below the proof. The finish is similar to pikesville.

Last night for FRyeday, I had a singular pour of Rittenhouse BiB, a SiB.
Always tastes good.

Last week my wife, some friends and I took a trip from Chicago to Denver.  On the way home, we decided to take a route up into Wyoming (which none of us had ever visited before), mainly just to say we'd been there.  We got gas and snacks at a truck stop and I bought a Wyoming fridge magnet, and we headed off for the long trek across Nebraska.  But just before we got to the border we saw a billboard for a distillery.  We hadn't planned on making another stop but the consensus was, why not?  So we took the exit and made our way to Pine Bluffs Distilling.  Although they were technically closed on Monday when we stopped by, under the hours posted on the door was a note: "If the door is unlocked we're here; come on in."  The door was in fact unlocked so we did, and met Chad Brown, one of the proprietors, who told us about their operation and products.

Pine Bluffs is a "farm to flask" (their phrase) operation---they even do their own malting!  And while they make straight bourbons (rye and wheated) and straight rye, they are also experimenting with unusual mashbills and atypical grains.  Personally I love stuff like that.  If I had a distillery it would probably be a lot like Pine Bluffs.   So of course we picked up a few bottles.

Their straight rye differs from most in its mashbill:  68% rye, 14% malted barley, 14% malted wheat, and 4% oats.  In their tasting room they had a special single-barrel expression available, "Fuck Cancer". One of the proprietors was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.  She picked this barrel, and the proceeds are going to defray treatment costs.  I lost my own sister to cancer a while back so I endorsed the sentiment.  So I bought a bottle of that, and I also got a bottle of a 100% malted rye whiskey they had (and we got a bottle of barrel-aged gin).  The whiskeys are both nice, more subtle and delicate than I expected.

The proprietor mentioned that he was surprised that they got the label for "Fuck Cancer" approved.  I noted that the labeling rules don't always seem to be meticulously enforced, and if in this case that worked to their benefit, great.

I’ve driven by that distillery a number of times but never stopped. Maybe I will next

time. We live in Montana and have family in Nebraska.

I don’t have a dram shot, but I picked these up yesterday and opened the Dickel / Leopold. Still formulating thoughts, but I enjoyed it. Will dip into the New Riff tonight.
