I'll look for their single barrel offering to sample and see if I come away with the same impressions.

Be sure to try the SiB BP rye. It is one of my favorite whiskeys. They are around the 130pf but drink more like a 110ish pf. IMO

While I do recommend this bottle and have owned several, it is quite rye forward. Brown forman does use a yeast that ranges from banana bread to sweet tarts, which may compliment/ mask the heavy rye influence. But don't be fooled the sib rye is very rye.

I suspect you are right on in your assessment. I disliked the Bonded Rye, and while a Single Barrel will take on a different flavor profile, I would submit the mash bill is essentially the same. To your point that means it will be very rye forward. If that is the case, it would only be doable for me in an old fashioned or Manhattan. I'll keep an open mind.

The JDSBBP rye is sooooo much better than the bonded version.

It's more complex, spicier, but sweeter.

It may be a rye that you enjoy. It drinks below its proof. I have a few bottles, varying in proof, and the higher proof releases benefit when poured over a tiny cube, or a splash to open it up, and tame the heat.

As luck would have it, I was able to sample the single barrel rye from Jack Daniel’s last night at a bar in San Diego. Crazy the prices they were charging for bourbons, that aside I did indeed enjoy the single barrel rye.

I am very glad I was able to find it and more so that I enjoyed it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts

Mrs. Skinsfan is the ultimate enabler.  She poured it...😆

That’s fabulous. On a similar note, my 10 year old knows more about bourbon than my wife does. He is very observant and often joins me on my liquor store hunts. I knows the brands, varieties I seek and calls them out to me when we are in the stores.

Uh-OH!   Better start marking the fill levels on yer bottles?   Kidding, I hope.   Although my brother, a cousin, and I used to 'sample' my Dad's liquor at about age 12 or 13, so it may not be outa the realm of possibility.

Well like most young kids, he doesn’t like the smell or taste. I’m sure that will change in time.

Slainte!

Friday the thirteenth, I took my son on a day trip to Brown Co. State Park.  It rained hard the first part of the drive down, then almost nothing but occasional light mist when we got to the park.  It was lovely, and relatively few visitors.  After I returned home, I finally got around to opening the Bulleit Rye I had picked up.  MGP stuff

Later tonight, we have the Pacers.

JDSBBP Rye for a Fryeday evening first pour.  It is just what I need so I may just stick with it through the night.

The girls took me to sagamore today for father's day. I had a few pours from the bar. The standout by far was the distillery only barrel select. Although their new cask strength, which is now made entirely in house and has a 7 year age statement is quite good as well. The girls bought me a bottle of each from the gift shop to bring home.

Nice father's day present!

I've seen the new in-house Cask Strength in stores but haven't purchased it yet because I still have a pretty good back stock of various Sag bottles.  Whenever you get the chance to open yours let us know how it compares to their in-house BiB bottle.  I have the 5 and 6 year versions of that.  Or how the new CS compares to the older Indiana CS.

The new cask strength is much closer in profile to the mgp sourced cask strength, but is a bit sharper and hotter. I found the early bibs to have a slight bitterness and a molasses and/or chocolate note to them. So the new cask strength is not particularly a similar profile. The new in house cask strength does have a slight sweet note to it, like sweet green grapes hiding mid palate, I would recommend purchasing one.

That does sound interesting and worth purchasing.  I may have to pick one up after all.  Or alternatively I may work through some Sag store pick bottles that I have and by the time those are empty the in-house CS might even by an 8 year whiskey (or 9 considering how long it takes me to empty bottles, lol).

Thanks for the feedback sir!

So i collect a batch 1a of all the non finished general releases and if I can the distillery only non finished products. But for drinking I have to say the 8 year batch 2a and now these new 9 year barrel select are far ahead of the pack. The distillery only barrel select is my favorite sagamore product so far, but there have been a few versions that have gone to stores that are incredible. If you see any 9 year barrel select you should buy it without hesitation.

There is a 9 year barrel select?  I have the 9 year batched product.  I've never seen any barrel select pick older than 7 years, but if I did I would certainly pick one up.  Among the 6 and 7 year picks, I haven't had enough to declare a trend, but in my small sample size experience, I usually have to decide between an upper floor (warehouse) 6 yr and a lower floor 7 year.  The upper floor 6 year have been better.

The 8 year bottles I have are batch 2a I think.  I remember looking for batch 2a when I went shopping.  I heard there will be a 10 year batch coming out soon to replace the current 9 year batch.
