PaulO
I've visited the Bulleit Rye several times since opening. It had been some lapse of time prior to that for me having anything from MGP. The 95% rye, if handled correctly (aged long enough in a good warehouse, bottled at 90+ proof) is quite nice. I wonder if anyone has done a side by side Bulleit Rye/Dickel Rye. Aren't they basically the same thing, except Dickel runs it through maple charcoal.
Mattk
I had a lucky find in a popular liquor store today. I couldn't believe they still had one. Not lucky enough there was more then one. If you ever see one I recommend picking it up. This is one of a few buy on site bottles i have. Edited June 19 by Mattk

A fellow band member was first generation US/Polish. He received “gifts” from time to time from family members in Poland. The Spirytus actually arrived in a goat skin bag. We had a unit party just before he was transferred to another duty station. He made sure that everyone had a swig of his Spirytus. Tilt your head back, open your mouth, squirt, next. I love it, and I'm mostly skeptical of proof and wood stuff. A few senator picks and some of the tumbling dice picks have been really good. But proof and wood has been more miss then hit for me. Anyway this particular run was called the stranger and it is amazing. It drinks like a really well balanced high rye rye, but with somehow just more flavor. It reminds me of a really good michters 10 rye if you brought the proof up to 105 and canceled out any of the stone fruit flavors.
Mattk
So it was a heck of a frustrating day. Fryeday it is, just one today as I still do work tomorrow. I wince a bit every time I pour from this bottle as it feels like it is getting quite low. But that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the liquid in the glass. Cheers.

Well if it makes you feel any better, just remember the glass bottle is black and you can't see the level inside. Just tell yourself that it's still 3/4 full ... no anxiety! Mattk
It was a really hot week this week, so i ended up not drinking any whiskey at all until today. Now I'm having a pour of this ps traverse city barrel proof rye. It's really hitting the spot. It's loaded with dried ginger candy and cardamom. The fascinating thing about this bottle though is the mouth feel. It is effervescent, almost carbonated in texture, but also oily and mouth coating at the same time.
LCWoody
I only have 2 VWRyes left, one is B from 2011 and F from 2015. A friend of mine had never tried the VWRys, so what better reason to open up both bottles. its been a long time since I’ve had a glass of it. Damn, they are so good. I’m glad I opened them up.

What does the significance of the B and F? I have not had the opportunity to try the VW rye.

The "B" batch had a higher mix of 19y Medley Rye and 19y Cream of Kentucky Rye then Batch "F", until it got to Batch "Z". The reason for this was Julian Van Winkle had a contract with BT and he was slowly adding BT Rye into each Batch so there would not be such a drastic change in taste.

It appears that the VW Rye story ( and maybe all VW bottling???) is a bit confusing. I found this chart and another article that tries to explain some of the history of VW Family Rye. But what little I got from the following articles it seems that Medley Family and Bernheim had something to do with PVW FR and later on, BT. Not sure if this Bernheim is the same HH Bernheim of today? Plus the Old Commonwealth Distillery had their hands in PVW as well which changed hands and names over many yrs ( or was that the Hoffman Distillery???). Including Juian VW. O the hell with it, I just wanna try PVW FR. Lol Thank you for your reply. Now i have some homework to do in trying to understand this bit of whiskey history. I am definitely going to need a drink or 2 to get through this. https://www.bourbonex.com/forums/topic/395/van-winkle-family-reserve-rye-vwfrr-release-age-distillate https://thebourbonculture.com/whiskey-reviews/old-commonwealth-10-year-cask-strength-kentucky-straight-bourbon-2024-review/ THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR REPLY.
